Munich Airport Unveils Upgraded CT Security Lanes Ahead of Easter

On Monday Bavarian Minister of Transport Christian Bernreiter (center) celebrated the completion of the conversion of the central security lanes in Terminal 2 of Munich Airport to the modern and convenient CT technology together with Dr. Konrad Schober, President of the Government of Upper Bavaria (from left), Jens Ritter, CEO Lufthansa Airlines, Jost Lammers, CEO Munich Airport and Jan-Henrik Andersson, Chief Commercial & Chief Security Officer Munich Airport.

(IN SHORT) Munich Airport has officially launched its newly modernized central security lanes at Terminal 2 after three years of reconstruction. The 15-lane system, equipped with advanced CT scanners, is designed to enhance passenger convenience by allowing simultaneous screening of up to four passengers’ hand luggage without the need to unpack electronics and liquids. It also improves security by automatically detecting explosives and providing 3D images, reducing follow-up checks and saving time. During the opening, key figures including Minister Christian Bernreiter, Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers, and Lufthansa CEO Jens Ritter, experienced the new technology firsthand. Additional upgrades, including the construction of two more CT lanes in Terminal 2 and future plans for Terminal 1, underscore the airport’s commitment to maintaining its status as a premium hub through significant investments exceeding €45 million.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 2025-Apr-8 — /Travel PR News/ — After three years of intensive reconstruction, the central security lanes at Terminal 2 of Munich Airport have been fully modernized and were officially inaugurated today. The new 15-lane setup, launched by the Southern Bavarian Aviation Authority under the Government of Upper Bavaria, has been unveiled just in time for the Easter holidays. Featuring cutting-edge CT scanner technology, the upgraded lanes streamline the screening process for both passengers and security personnel while markedly boosting overall safety standards.

The latest equipment is designed to enhance passenger convenience by allowing up to four travelers to have their hand luggage screened simultaneously. Unlike traditional systems, electronic devices and liquids no longer require unpacking and repacking, and the CT scanners automatically identify any explosives in every piece of baggage. The three-dimensional imagery provided by these scanners not only improves detection accuracy but also reduces the number of follow-up checks, speeding up the security process considerably.

During the inauguration, high-ranking officials—including Bavarian Minister of Transport Christian Bernreiter, Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers, and Lufthansa Airlines CEO Jens Ritter—had the chance to test the new system firsthand. They received a detailed technical briefing from experts representing the Ministry of Transport, the Aviation Authority, and the security company at Munich Airport (SGM).

Minister of State Christian Bernreiter highlighted Bavaria’s commitment to innovation: “At Munich Airport, we rely on the latest security technology! The new CT lanes will make security checks for passengers and baggage even safer, faster and more convenient. The Free State of Bavaria is investing more than €45 million to gradually equip all security checkpoints at Munich Airport with these new lanes, including Terminal 1. We are also investing in Nuremberg and Memmingen to maintain and expand the leading positions of the Bavarian airports.”

Jost Lammers emphasized the impact on service quality: “The new security lanes are one of the most important quality features at our airport. Just in time for the first major travel season of the year, our passengers can now benefit from the latest and safest technology, more efficient processes and noticeably more comfort. These are the standards we, as an international premium hub, want to fulfill together with our partners. We owe it to the outstanding commitment of everyone involved that we were able to complete this complex conversion ahead of schedule during ongoing operations.”

Jens Ritter added, “Today is an important step towards the future. The common goal of the airport and us is to offer a premium product as well as reliability and punctuality. The CT scanners are a perfect fit for this. Our guests will now be able to get to their gate faster and enjoy Terminal 2 even more relaxed.”

Following successful pilot tests in 2019 by the Southern Bavarian Aviation Authority, SGM, and the Terminal 2 Operating Company, reconstruction on the central security checkpoint began in October 2022. In addition to the current lanes, two more CT-equipped lanes are set to be built by the end of 2025 to enhance convenience for families with young children and travelers with limited mobility. Meanwhile, conversion works at Terminal 1 are scheduled for completion by the summer vacation season of 2026. With these investments, Munich Airport cements its status as a leading premium hub on the cutting edge of security technology.
