Munich Airport expands Terminal 2 security capacity while introducing inclusive screening for travellers with diverse needs

(IN SHORT) Munich Airport has opened Germany’s first inclusive security checkpoint at Terminal 2, designed to improve accessibility and create a more supportive travel experience for passengers with special needs and families with young children. The barrier-free checkpoint replaces automated boarding pass readers with personal assistance from staff who guide travellers through the process at an appropriate pace. The design incorporates elements of the Sunflower Initiative, which promotes awareness and support for travellers with non-visible disabilities. The area also includes a family-friendly environment with children’s films and a welcoming layout to reduce stress during security screening. Expanded space and an upgraded baggage inspection system allow for easier handling of wheelchairs, walkers and strollers. The new checkpoint also increases Terminal 2 security screening capacity by approximately 400 passengers per hour.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, Germany, 2026-Mar-9 — /Travel PR News/ — Munich Airport has introduced a new inclusive security checkpoint in Terminal 2 designed to provide a more accessible and supportive travel experience for passengers with special needs as well as families travelling with young children. The new facility represents the first security checkpoint of its kind in Germany and marks a significant step toward barrier-free and more inclusive airport operations.

The newly opened control area has been designed to accommodate a wide range of passenger needs while creating a calm and welcoming environment during the security screening process. Fully accessible infrastructure allows passengers with reduced mobility to move through the checkpoint more comfortably, while the entire process has been structured to place greater emphasis on personal assistance.

Instead of relying solely on automated boarding pass scanners, passengers are welcomed by staff members who guide them through the process and adjust the pace of the security screening according to individual needs. The approach aims to create a more supportive experience, particularly for travellers who may require additional time or assistance.

The design of the checkpoint also reflects Munich Airport’s participation in the Sunflower Initiative, an international programme that promotes awareness and assistance for people with non-visible disabilities. As a member of the initiative since 2025, the airport incorporated elements into the planning process that help staff identify and support travellers who may need additional guidance or understanding during their journey.

Families travelling with children also benefit from the redesigned area. The checkpoint features a bright and welcoming atmosphere, along with short children’s films that help keep young travellers entertained and relaxed while parents prepare their belongings for screening.

Additional space and an upgraded baggage inspection system have been integrated to simplify the screening of mobility aids and family equipment. The expanded layout allows for easier handling of wheelchairs, walkers, walking aids and strollers during the security process.

The inclusive checkpoint also contributes to operational efficiency. By introducing the new control area, Munich Airport is increasing the capacity of the central security screening area in Terminal 2 by approximately 400 passengers per hour.

Security screening at Munich Airport continues to be managed by the South Bavarian Aviation Authority, which is responsible for overseeing all passenger security checks at the airport.

Through the introduction of the inclusive checkpoint, Munich Airport aims to create a more seamless and accessible travel experience while supporting passengers with a variety of mobility, sensory and family-related needs.
