(IN SHORT) Munich Airport and Lufthansa have signed a new agreement to extend their joint venture through 2056 and support future growth at the Munich aviation hub. The deal includes plans to expand Terminal 2 infrastructure, increase long-haul operations, and enhance passenger capacity by up to ten million additional travelers annually. The expansion, expected to open in 2035, will be accommodated within the existing runway system and is projected to deliver economic benefits across Bavaria, including job creation and improved global connectivity. Building on a partnership that began in 2003, the agreement reinforces Munich’s position as a leading international hub while enhancing service quality and passenger experience.
(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH. Germany, 2026-Mar-23 — /Travel PR News/ — Munich Airport and Lufthansa have agreed to extend and deepen their long-standing joint venture, setting the foundation for continued collaboration and growth through 2056. The agreement includes plans to expand terminal infrastructure and increase long-haul operations, reinforcing Munich’s role as a major international aviation hub.
A central element of the agreement is the initiation of planning for an expansion of the Terminal 2 system, alongside further development of Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet based in Munich. Together, these measures aim to support rising passenger demand and strengthen the airport’s capacity for future air traffic growth.
The partnership is expected to deliver significant economic benefits, including improved performance for Munich Airport, the creation of additional skilled jobs in the region, and enhanced value generation across Bavaria. It also aims to improve connectivity for passengers, offering more direct links between Bavaria and global destinations.
Bavarian State Prime Minister Markus Söder highlighted the importance of Munich Airport as a key gateway for international travel and trade, noting that the collaboration between the airport and Lufthansa has been a unique and successful model since 2003. He pointed to plans to expand the Terminal 2 satellite infrastructure, which could increase annual capacity by up to ten million passengers, as well as Lufthansa’s intention to strengthen its long-haul network with additional aircraft and enhanced service offerings.
Albert Füracker, Bavarian Minister of Finance and Chairman of Munich Airport’s Supervisory Board, emphasized that the agreement benefits not only the airport but the broader regional economy, while also improving travel options for passengers.
Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, described the agreement as a major milestone that will further develop the airport’s position as a global hub, enhancing both capacity and passenger experience.
The agreement enables the next phase of detailed planning for the infrastructure expansion, which includes the construction of a new pier connected to the existing satellite building of Terminal 2. This development is expected to increase overall passenger capacity while providing improved comfort and facilities. The new infrastructure is currently scheduled to open in 2035.
The planned expansion will not affect the existing moratorium on a third runway, as the anticipated increase in passenger traffic can be accommodated within the current two-runway system.
The partnership between Munich Airport and Lufthansa has been central to the airport’s development since the opening of Terminal 2 in 2003, when both parties established a joint operating model for the facility. Today, Munich Airport is recognized as a leading international hub and holds a five-star airport rating, known for its high service standards and efficient passenger experience.
Munich Airport currently holds a 60% stake in the Terminal 2 operating company, with Lufthansa owning the remaining 40%. Together, Terminal 2 and its satellite building, which opened in 2016, provide a combined annual capacity of 36 million passengers.
