LONDON, 2015-3-20 — /Travel PR News/ — More air travellers are going paperless, according to London City Airport (LCY), making better use of technology to speed up their journey.
The number of passengers downloading their boarding pass to their mobile phone has increased by seven percentage points in twelve months – from 14% to 21%. Some 62% of UK adults are smartphone users.
Meanwhile, the number of passengers visiting a manned desk in the terminal fell from 36% to 29%.
The total number of passengers checking in online, including mobile phone and hard copy boarding passes, reached 54%.
However, with just one in five passengers now paperless, there is still a long way to go.
Alison Fitzgerald, Chief Information Officer at London City Airport said: “Most of us are choosing paperless processes more and more, such as the way we receive our utility bills, or contactless payments for public transport removing the need for tickets. But, even though we check-in for flights online, the majority of us still print out hard copies of our boarding passes.
“We want passengers to think about their journey beginning at home or the office, taking control to save themselves time and effort further down the line. Less time at the airport means more time to do other things.”
Usage of other check-in methods remained fairly static, including printing boarding pass at home and use of self-service kiosks.
