Marine Ecology Enhancement Fund and Fisheries Enhancement Fund support twelve projects with over HK$13 million
HONG KONG, CHINA, 2022-Jul-20 — /Travel PR News/ — Twelve projects have received a total of over HK$13 million from the independent Marine Ecology Enhancement Fund (MEEF) and Fisheries Enhancement Fund (FEF) for a 12-month period from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023. The funded projects are managed and conducted by universities, research organisations, and associations from the fisheries industry.
Under the MEEF, around HK$4.8 million has been granted to seven projects, on subjects including repurposing shellfish shell, studying the density of Chinese White Dolphins by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, researching on the reproductive biology of Octocoral, enhancing biodiversity on artificial seawalls, and more.
Under the FEF, about HK$8.5 million has been granted to five projects, on subjects including sustainable aquaculture of tropical sea cucumbers, antioxidant function of pearl oysters, occupational safety and health for local fishermen.
Applications to the MEEF and FEF are reviewed and approved by independently operated Management Committees (MCs) based on criteria related to the proposed projects’ objectives, past performance, methodology, manpower, resources and budget. MC members comprise scholars and experts from related fields as well as representatives from green groups and fishermen’s associations. The progress and outcomes of the funded projects are monitored by their respective MCs.
The MEEF and FEF are independent funds set up with the aim of enhancing the marine environment, ecology and fisheries resources in the vicinity of the project area. Airport Authority has injected a total of HK$400 million into the MEEF and FEF. About HK$69 million has been granted from the funds to support marine ecology and fisheries projects to date.
