ATLANTA, 2012-08-21 — /travelprnews.com/ — Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has signed a contract with C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. Inc., paving the way for a major project to improve access to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and to enhance safety on Airport roadways.
The plan to improve the inbound roadways to the domestic terminal calls for the construction of nearly 11 new lane miles and five new bridges as well as the reconfiguration of some roadway segments, intersections and bridges.
“This is an important project for our hometown customers,” said Aviation General Manager Louis Miller. “When it is complete, they will have better and safer motor vehicle access to the domestic terminal.”
Construction is expected to begin by September 1 and to be complete within two years. The work will be done in phases and is not expected to require lane closures.
“These improvements will eliminate a number of problematic lane changes and add decision-making time for motorists who need to go to either the north or south terminal,” said Kathryn Masters, assistant director of project development.
Though the impact is expected to be minimal during construction, passengers should allow extra time to reach the north and south domestic terminals because of temporary roads, lane shifts and reduced speeds.
“The main access to the domestic north and south terminals will remain generally the same during construction,” Miller said. “However, as with any work zone, motorists will need to pay special attention and take extra caution as they travel to and from Hartsfield-Jackson in the coming months.”
The contract amount for the project is about $48.5 million. Passenger facility charges (PFCs) will provide 100 percent of funding.
