Lufthansa Group to modernise its aircraft fleet with the acquisition of 15 Airbus A320neo and 10 Airbus A320ceo aircraft

Renewal of SWISS and Eurowings fleets

Frankfurt, Germany, 2014-9-17 — /Travel PR News/ — The Lufthansa Group is systematically pursuing the modernisation of its aircraft fleet. At the recommendation of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG under CEO, Carsten Spohr, the Supervisory Board approved the purchase of 15 state-of-the-art aircraft from the Airbus A320neo (New Engine Option) family and ten Airbus A320ceo (Current Engine Option) aircraft at its meeting today.

The new A320neo orders will be delivered to Lufthansa Group airline Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) from 2019 onwards, where they are intended to replace older aircraft from the same family. The ten new A320ceo aircraft will be delivered to Eurowings in 2016 and 2017 and will replace older Bombardier CRJ900s.

The Lufthansa Group’s latest investment in new technology, efficiency and passenger comfort represents a volume of around EUR 2.5bn at list prices. This order for modern, fuel-efficient and quiet aircraft takes the Lufthansa Group a major step closer towards maintaining and expanding its market position by reducing its unit costs. The A320neo, in particular, stands out for its improved aerodynamics and new engines. As a result, the aircraft use around 15 per cent less fuel than comparable models today. Furthermore, the cumulative noise emissions will be around 10–15 dB below current limits and also represent further progress in terms of reducing noise and other emissions compared with today’s fleet.

The Lufthansa Group fleet is currently undergoing a fundamental renewal. Following the aircraft order placed last year, the Group currently has a total of 265 brand-new aircraft on order with a list value of EUR 30bn (as of: 1. September 2014). These are to be delivered by 2025.

The aircraft are to be paid for from the Group’s cash reserves or through external funding arrangements.
