Lufthansa Group accelerates fleet modernization by taking delivery of 23 new aircraft

Cologne, Germany, 2014-2-12 — /travelprnews.com/ — Last Friday, February 7, 2014, Lufthansa’s tenth Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental landed at Frankfurt Airport. The “dash-8” is just one of seven brand-new airliners that will be joining the Group in February and March. Over the next few weeks, these ultra-modern jets will be arriving like pearls on a necklace at Frankfurt: alongside three Boeing 747-8s, Lufthansa has acquired one Airbus A380, one A330 and two A320. In addition, Germanwings will receive an A319 and Lufthansa Cargo will take delivery of a Boeing 777F freighter. All in all, the Group expects to receive 23 ultra-modern commercial aircraft this year.

Following a final fit-out at Lufthansa Technik in Frankfurt and operational approval, today’s Boeing 747-8 arrival – registration “Yankee Lima” – could already start scheduled passenger flights by the end of February. It will replace an older Boeing 747-400, which will then be taken out of service. And both passengers and local residents will notice the difference: the new Boeing aircraft is around 30 percent quieter than the older model.

“With these new, state-of-the-art aircraft, we are investing in both passenger comfort for customers and the ecological sustainability of flight operations,” said Christoph Franz, Chairman of the Executive Board and the CEO of Lufthansa Group, on the occasion of the arrival of the tenth of 19 new jumbo jets in Frankfurt. “Lufthansa Group employees work hard to ensure the success of our company in a demanding market segment,” he continued. “They are the driving force behind the success of our SCORE modernization program. We’re now starting to see the fruits of their efforts – and that’s a reason to celebrate.”

This year’s deliveries are part of a comprehensive fleet modernization program underway at Lufthansa Group Airlines. A total of 261 aircraft will be delivered by 2025, at a list price of 32 billion euros. This highlights the Group’s ability to invest continuously in the latest airliners, which offer lower operating costs complemented by improved environmental performance and greatly reduced noise emissions.

Improved efficiency for short-, medium- and long-haul flights

The use of new aircraft significantly reduces noise emissions and kerosene consumption for scheduled flights. The design of the Boeing 747-8, for example, features considerable gains in environmental performance: the aircraft’s ultra-modern engines consume less kerosene – improving fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions by 15 percent per passenger – while also shrinking the aircraft’s noise footprint by 30 percent.

More comfort – for any class of passenger

The new aircrafts also offer improved in-cabin comfort. On board the 747-8, passengers can enjoy the new Business Class, for example, with its outstanding seat and sleep comfort, additional stowage space and a personal entertainment system whose screen has again been enlarged to a 15-inch monitor. Thanks to outer skin insulation and a cabin seat that converts into a bed measuring 2.07 meters by 80 centimeters, First Class passengers will also enjoy a truly exclusive travel experience. Economy Class passengers also enjoy improved seating, ensuring they travel to their destination in comfort.
