2013-03-07 — /travelprnews.com/ —  Highlands College University Centre, in partnership with Hautlieu School, will be hosting an international conference on small islands next year. The theme of the conference is ‘Challenges and success’.

Almost 300 international experts and academics in the field of island studies are expected to attend the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA) biennial conference, entitled ‘Islands of the World XIII’, on 27 – 30 May 2014.

ISISA aims to study islands and encourage scholarly discussion on small island related issues. The ISISA biennial conference in June 2012 decided to award the 2014 conference to Jersey following a successful presentation. The overall theme of the conference will be ‘Islands: challenges and success’ but discussions will include topics such as Island cultures and identity and Islands governance.

Professor Ed Sallis, OBE, Chairman of the organising committee is enthusiastic about the conference: “I’m delighted that Jersey is hosting this major international event. It will provide numerous academic and economic benefits to the Island as well as promoting our international profile.

“This conference is also an excellent opportunity for people in Jersey to network and exchange ideas and examples of best practice with experts from around the world.”

The Executive Principal of Highlands College and Hautlieu School, Ms Lesley Toms, added:

“This conference helps to promote the high academic standards of the University Centre in Jersey and its commitment to developing links with other educational organisations.”

“The conference is being held during the school half term to make best use of the excellent facilities at Hautlieu School for an event of this kind.”

The conference organisers have also published a call for papers and are inviting researchers, academics and interested islanders to contribute. The deadline for submitting an abstract is 1 November 2013.

Further information is available on the Highlands College website.
