Industry Led Training Programme at Manchester Airport Sees First Graduates Move into Employment

(NEWS) MANCHESTER, UK, 2026-Apr-9 — /Travel PR News/ — A new apprenticeship programme aimed at building the next generation of aviation professionals has reached a milestone in the UK, as its first group of graduates completes training at Manchester Airport.

A cohort of 11 apprentices has finished the Level 3 Aviation Ground Specialist course, a two-year programme developed through a partnership between Manchester Airports Group and Trafford and Stockport College Group. The initiative was first introduced in 2023 as part of efforts to create clearer pathways into aviation careers for local talent.

According to details shared by the partners, the course is designed to provide a comprehensive view of airport operations. Participants rotate through multiple placements across the airport, covering areas such as terminal management, airfield safety, ground handling and runway operations, while also receiving classroom-based instruction at the college’s Altrincham campus.

The programme forms part of a broader strategy by Manchester Airports Group to develop future talent within the sector, with a focus on hands-on experience and direct exposure to live airport environments. Organisers say this approach is intended to better align training with real-world operational demands in an industry that operates around the clock.

Early outcomes suggest strong employment prospects for graduates. Several members of the first cohort have already secured roles within the airport, including positions in safety and compliance, airfield operations and support functions. The programme also builds on a longer-standing collaboration between the two organisations, which has supported nearly 2,000 learners into employment since 2012.

Beyond technical training, the course also introduces apprentices to broader industry trends, including evolving operational models, the impact of new technologies and changing best practices across global aviation. Students are also supported in developing workplace skills such as interview preparation and professional communication.

The initiative reflects a wider push across the aviation sector to address skills gaps and improve access to careers beyond traditional roles such as pilots and cabin crew. Industry leaders have increasingly emphasised the need to attract talent into operational, safety and management positions that are less visible to passengers but essential to airport performance.

Regional stakeholders have also highlighted the importance of such programmes in supporting local economic development. By targeting recruitment through nearby schools and colleges, the course aims to create employment opportunities within the communities surrounding the airport.

With additional apprenticeship pathways already in place for existing staff, including leadership and supervisory training, the partnership is expected to continue expanding its role in workforce development across the region.
