Indianapolis Airport Authority completes $1.5 million in improvements to the Metropolitan Airport

$1.5 million in improvements funded in part by federal and state grants

INDIANAPOLIS, 2018-Jul-13 — /Travel PR News/ — The Indianapolis Airport Authority has completed $1.5 million in improvements to the Metropolitan Airport, within budget and ahead of schedule. Located within Fishers, Ind., the Metropolitan Airport is part of the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) general aviation system.

Improvements to the Metropolitan Airport included resurfacing and extending Taxiway A, installing LED lighting and repainting runway markers. Taxiway A was extended to 4,004 feet to match the overall length of the runway. The work began on April 23 and was substantially completed on May 31. The airfield reopened ahead of schedule in June.

Funding for the improvements were part of the $16 million in federal and state grants awarded to the IAA in 2017.

“General aviation airports like Metro are crucial to the overall transportation landscape,” said IAA Executive Director Mario Rodriguez. “They provide flexibility for flight and function that can’t always be accommodated via commercial flight. Investing in improvements to our general aviation airports is crucial in supporting the public value they deliver to communities throughout Central Indiana.”

General aviation airports across the nation help to support services such as overnight package delivery, emergency medical transportation, disaster relief support, engineering inspection trips to remote construction sites, aerial application for crop health, airborne law enforcement activities and act as the training sites for future military and airline pilots, as well as promote business development. More than half of general aviation flights are for business purposes and public services that need flexible transportation options.

The IAA owns and operates Indiana’s largest airport system. In addition to the Indianapolis International Airport and the Metropolitan Airport, the IAA also operates the Downtown Heliport, Eagle Creek Airpark, Hendricks County Airport-Gordon Graham Field and the Indianapolis Regional Airport in Greenfield.
