Madrid, Spain, 2014-6-5 — /Travel PR News/ — Six months ago Amadeus, Iberia and UNICEF’s Spanish Committee joined in a pioneering project aimed at raising funds for UNICEF’s endangered children’s projects. Amadeus developed a technological platform for Iberia.com enabling on-line ticket buyers to donate from 3 to 20 euros directly to UNICEF.
From December through May, some 12,000 Iberia customers handed over more than 70,000 euros, which UNICEF has earmarked for the “100% Vaccinated Children” programme to reduce the number of children who die of vaccine-preventable diseases each year. Measles, polio, and whooping cough are fatal illnesses that have been nearly forgotten in the West, but still kill a child every 20 seconds in the world’s poorest countries.
“We’re proud to be a part of this pioneering project, and be able to contribute to the improvement of children’s living conditions all over the world. These 70,000 euros are only a first step, and we hope to raise much more in the next few months,” commented Manuel López Colmenarejo, Iberia Network and Alliances Development Director.
“We’re supplying this donations engine free of charge to UNICEF and to airlines like Iberia that have agreed to cooperate with us in this project. We urge all our travel industry partners to get on board and contribute to achieving a greater impact,” said Tomas López Fernebrand, Amadeus’ Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary.
“One of every five children in the world still doesn’t get the basic vaccinations, and 1.5 million of them die for that reason. Alliances like this one open a space in which millions of people can join the challenge of putting an end to this situation. In early childhood a vaccination can make the difference between life and death. That’s why cooperation is vital to bring about real changes in the lives of millions of children,” said Javier Martos, Executive Director of the UNICEF Spanish Committee.
