In Celebration of Mother’s Day in Thailand, Luxurious Resort Hotel Educates Younger Generation on Environmental Sustainability

PHUKET, Thailand, 2012-08-21 — /travelprnews.com/ — Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa recentlyteamed up with Lon Island Children to nurture local children in Koh Lone’s small community as part of International Youth Week and Mother’s Day celebrations on August 9, 2012. Designed to educate children on environmental concepts through green-themed activities and games, team members demonstrated the “reduce, recycle, and reuse” waste disposal hierarchy and planted new trees for the neighborhood.

“We are delighted to play a role in educating the younger generation about the importance of protecting, restoring and conserving Phuket’s natural surroundings. Our Mother’s Day activities form the roots of our efforts in encouraging sustainability in Thai local communities,” said Andre A Gomez, general manager, Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa.

Thirty-three team members, 12 children, and four teachers engaged in activities that ranged from Mother’s Day arts and crafts creation, obstacle races, seed-sowing, and eco-friendly sidewalk painting. In his opening remarks, Koh Lone School’s headmaster, Mr Sompord, expressed his appreciation to the hotel for donating new blankets, toys and storybooks to the Koh Lone community.

One of Phuket’s most underprivileged areas, Koh Lone is the second largest island in Phuket and is located 20 minutes away from Phuket by boat. It is also known as “Koh Lohn” or “Lon Island.” Friendly Muslim communities populate Koh Lone’s communities as they make their living from fishing, rubber tree plantation, and coconut farms. The island has a population of 200 residents and has one government school. The school serves children from grades one to six. As families moved to Phuket’s mainland, the school body’s enrollment dwindled from 40 to 12 students. The island recently received electricity and Internet connection in February 2012.
