‘Green Destinations’ expands in Asia Pacific: More destinations awarded Sustainability Certification

Chennai, India, 2024-Oct-25 — /Travel PR News/ — The Netherlands based global destination certifier ‘Green Destinations’ is expanding its list of awarded destinations in Asia Pacific. The non-profit organization is a Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) accredited certification body working towards sustainability and climate action. So far 122 destinations across the world have been awarded various levels of certification by ‘Green Destinations’ out of which ten destinations are from Asia Pacific.

‘Green Destinations’ has been collaborating with the National Scenic Area Administration and Sustainable Travel Taiwan from 2017 onwards and has certified three destinations. This was followed by its strategic alliance with Thailand Tourism (DASTA) in programs in twenty destinations from 2019 onwards which has resulted in awarding of two destinations. from 2020, the organization joined hands with Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) aiming programs in thirty destinations. ‘Green Destinations’ has been the strategic partner of Bhutan Tourism Board for sustainability assessment and the National Certification Partner of Sri Lanka Tourism (SLTDA) for its UNDP funded project. In India, ‘Green Destinations’ has constituted a full-fledged network and has completed the certification of its first destination at Mamallapuram. The organization is also partnering with ‘Ecotourism Australia’ in certification of sustainable and ecotourism sites in Oceania region. In a recent development, ‘Green Destinations’ signed a MOU with Mekong Tourism for developing 20 low carbon Good Travel Experiences in South East Asia.

Mamallapuram

The World Heritage destination of Mamallapuram has been awarded the prestigious ‘Green Destinations Silver’ certificate as a token of its appreciation towards its steps in implementing sustainability initiatives, sustainable destination management and a recognition for the destinations’ efforts towards implementing Sustainable Development Goals. The destination on the shores of Bay of Bengal near the city of Chennai is noted for the seventh and eighth century Pallava rock cut and early structural monuments. Mamallapuram has become the first certified World Heritage Site in South Asia and the first destination in India.

Bhutan

 Earlier this year, the Kingdom of Bhutan received ‘Silver’ certification for its pathbreaking and replicable initiatives towards sustainability. With more than 70% forested land, Bhutan projects itself as the first carbon-negative country in the world. The certification tag will be a big boost for Bhutan in its sustainability journey in the future.

Chaing Khan and Nan Living Old City, Thailand

Thailand now has two destinations in the portfolio with Nan Living Old City receiving ‘Gold’ and Chaing Khan ‘Silver’ certificates. Nan is nestled in a lush valley in northern Thailand near the Laos border and remarkably preserves its cultural, traditional, religious, and historical values passed down through generations. The restoration and conservation of their valuable cultural heritage is reflected in its ancient sites, antiques, and significant religious places. The city of Chiang Khan is engraved with exquisite architecture of hundred-year-old wooden houses lined with breathtaking views of the Mekong River. Further, what makes the destination worth a visit is its life and culture, which are charming and unique, like the traditional sticky rice almsgiving.

Sigiriya

Sigiriya located in Central Sri Lanka is presently in the documentation and reporting stage for its certification project. Funded by UNDP, it is expected that the destination gets awarded by the end of this year. The World Heritage Site is noted for palace ruins on top of a massive two-hundred-meter-high rock which is a a lava plugs of extinct volcano surrounded by the remains of gardens, reservoirs. It is also renowned for its ancient paintings (frescoes) and was used as a rock-shelter mountain monastery from fifth century BC.
