BELFAST, Northern Ireland, 2019-Jul-08 — /Travel PR News/ — Bangor has been named as the ‘Best Kept Large Urban Centre’ at the prestigious Ireland’s Best Kept Town Awards 2019.
Judges were particularly impressed with the exceptional maintenance of Ward Park, Project 24, Bangor Castle Walled Garden, along with the beauty of the Marina.
The cultivation of wildflowers throughout the town also received the judges’ praise, as their presence can help improve the quality of water and soil, along with encouraging pollination and the presence of wildlife.
The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Bill Keery, said:
“I’m delighted that Bangor has been successful in winning this prestigious award against some tough opposition. It follows Newtownards’ past success for ‘Most Improved Town’ and highlights that our borough is among the best in the country.
“Winning this award is a huge credit to the entire community, including the business owners who help to make Bangor an attractive location for visitors as well as the residents who take great pride in their town.
“It also highlights the efforts of Ards and North Down Borough Council, which strives to ensure that the entire borough is an excellent place to be. The judges highlighted the cleanliness of our streets and the quality of our parks as well as the sea bins initiative and the friendliness and hospitality of the people.
“This is an award for all of Bangor and is something that everyone can be proud of!”
‘The Belfast City Airport Best Kept Awards’ is a Northern Ireland initiative and it collaborates with its Southern counterpart ‘Tidy Towns,’ to decide who should be given the prestigious accolades from entries across the length and breadth of Ireland.
Northern Irish village, Donaghmore, was also recognised as the Best Kept Village, securing a win against stiff competition from Ballymacarby in Waterford and Silvermines in Tipperary.
Doreen Muskett, President of the Northern Ireland Amenity Council that host the Best Kept Awards, attended the event in Farmleigh House, Dublin. She commented:
“The Best Kept Awards are designed to reward those who take great pride in their communities and those who work tirelessly to make their surroundings an appealing place to work, live and play in.
“My sincere congratulations to all of this year’s awards recipients. The panel of esteemed judges had a very difficult task in comparing and selecting the eventual winners, which is a testament to the stunning towns and villages that we are lucky enough to have here.
“It comes as no surprise to me that Donaghmore and Bangor have been recognised amongst Ireland’s most beautiful spots.”
Doreen was joined at the event by Secretary General, Department of Rural & Community Development Kevin McCarthy. He said:
“The all-island Best Kept Town Competition recognises the great pride people have in their own communities, both in Ireland and Northern Ireland. It shows how local volunteers take ownership of their surroundings and work to improve them, for both now and into the future.
“Being nominated for these awards represents an achievement in itself and is recognition of the efforts made by volunteers and local communities in the TidyTowns competition and the Belfast City Airport Best Kept competition in Northern Ireland.”
Stephen Patton, CR and HR Manager at George Best Belfast City airport, principal sponsor of the Best Kept Awards, added:
“On behalf of Belfast City Airport, I want to congratulate Bangor and its Councillors, Officers and residents for winning this award, which recognises the efforts taking place to maintain the high aesthetic standard that the awards demand.
“It is an honour to support the Best Kept Awards which help to motivate and inspire generations to get involved locally, something that Belfast City Airport also encourages through its Corporate Responsibility programme.”
