Today, 2012-10-18 — /travelprnews.com/ — Gatwick Airport welcomes new airline Icelandair – the national flagship carrier of Iceland – to its list of short-haul airlines, as it begins a twice a week service from Gatwick to Reykjavik.
Matt Wood, Head of Airline Relations at Gatwick Airport said: “We are delighted to welcome a new airline to Gatwick today, offering passengers further choice to this ever popular tourist winter destination.
“We are competing with other London airports to attract major airlines such as Icelandair and are committed to helping them grow and meet rising travel demands. Gatwick currently has around 25% spare capacity on its single runway, so we are in a great position to accommodate new airlines and ensure that London remains one of the best connected cities in the world.”
Hjőrvar Saeberg Hőgnason, General Manager at Icelandair said: “We are extremely happy to announce the start up of our service from Gatwick to Keflavik Airport as our flights will provide an excellent weekend link between London and Reykjavik. The flight times chosen offer the best possible long weekend options for both leisure and business passengers and meet the demands of our customers for winter tourism links.“
Icelandair will be increasing its service in Spring 2013 to three times a week, allowing passengers the opportunity to connect to onward destinations in North America, such as New York, Boston and Washington, via its extensive network.
Over the past three years, Gatwick has been investing around £20 million every month to transform the airport to make the facilities better for passengers and attract new airlines. With new routes to China, South Korea, Turkey, Caribbean and Vietnam, Gatwick is confident that more will follow.
