Lufthansa has once again received top honors among the airline industry, earning the “Doing it All” distinction in the 2012 Condé Nast Traveler World Savers Awards. The comprehensive awards program, which recognizes travel companies that are doing the most to save the world, requires applicants to meet exacting standards in the areas of preservation, wildlife conservation, health initiatives, poverty relief, and education programs. For the second straight year, Lufthansa has been recognized as a leader for its innovative, company-wide commitment to sustainability.
“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by Condé Nast Traveler for all Lufthansa does in the areas of environmental management and overall corporate responsibility,” said Juergen Siebenrock, Vice President of the Americas at Lufthansa. “From our certified ‘green building’ corporate headquarters, to investments that have made the world’s most fuel-efficient aircraft – the Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380 – the cornerstone of our fleet, to the life-saving humanitarian efforts of the employee-run HelpAlliance, sustainability is a value that is evident throughout Lufthansa.”
The magazine showcased Lufthansa’s pioneering alternative fuel study. This initiative included daily flights using a 50/50 blend of regular and biosynthetic fuels on flights along the Frankfurt-Hamburg route, as well as the world’s first biofuel-powered transatlantic commercial flight, which flew from Frankfurt to Washington, D.C. in January 2012.
A team of judges that included academics, CEOs, philanthropists and Condé Nast Traveler editors examined submissions, which this year hit a record 111, awarding the “Doing it All” distinction to companies with the highest overall scores within their specific travel category. The 2012 World Savers Awards are featured in the September issue of Condé Nast Traveler, which celebrates the magazine’s 25th anniversary and is on newsstands now.
