Activation of agreement with Neste marks airline’s first SAF investment in Asia

Approximately 3.3 million liters of blended SAF have been integrated into Changi Airport’s fueling system. This move supports Emirates’ commitment to reducing lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel. The airline plans to expand SAF adoption across its global network and pursue long-term partnerships to ensure sustainable fuel availability for its operations.

(PRESS RELEASE) Dubai, UAE, 2024-Jun-14 — /Travel PR News/ — Emirates has initiated the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Singapore Changi Airport under a new agreement with Neste, marking its first SAF deployment in Asia. Over the past few weeks, approximately 3.3 million liters of blended SAF have been incorporated into Changi Airport’s fueling system, advancing Emirates’ commitment to sustainable air travel.

The SAF supplied by Neste is derived from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, including used cooking oil and animal fat waste. This fuel, which reduces lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel, meets all safety standards for use in Emirates’ existing aircraft and airport infrastructure.

Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer of Emirates, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, “Emirates’ investment in Neste-produced SAF in Singapore marks a pivotal step in our SAF adoption in Asia, a region poised to become a major SAF supplier. While this agreement signifies progress in our SAF journey in a new region, our focus remains on securing long-term partnerships to ensure a sustainable supply for our operations.”

Alexander Kueper, Vice President Renewable Aviation Business at Neste, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting, “Emirates’ use of our Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel at Changi Airport underscores our joint commitment to scaling up SAF supply. We look forward to continuing our partnership to support Emirates’ sustainability goals.”

Emirates’ comprehensive SAF strategy includes operational SAF use wherever available in its network, collaboration on emissions reductions with corporate customers, and investment in long-term SAF projects. The airline aims to support sustainable aviation initiatives globally, including its participation in research and development projects focused on reducing the environmental impact of commercial aviation.
