Earth Day: Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reaffirms its commitment and efforts toward environmental stewardship

Washington DC, 2016-Apr-28 — /Travel PR News/ — In recognition of this year’s Earth Day, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) today reaffirms its commitment and efforts toward environmental stewardship. The cruise industry takes seriously its great responsibility to preserve and protect the environment, which is fundamental to the industry and essential to providing enjoyable travel experiences for the 24 million passengers who will cruise this year.

“While today we celebrate Earth Day, the cruise industry works every day to preserve the earth’s oceans and the destinations we visit,” said Cindy D’Aoust, president and CEO, CLIA. “Cruise ships today are the most environmentally friendly in history, and CLIA members take great pride in their efforts to continually improve environmental practices and performance, often exceeding international regulations.”

CLIA Member Cruise Lines are constantly innovating, investing $1 billion in new environmental technologies, including advanced wastewater treatment systems, exhaust gas cleaning systems, efficient lighting, solar panels, and building the world’s first LNG-fueled cruise ships. In addition to investment and innovation, CLIA members collaborate on environmental policy with regulators such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and share best practices with other sectors of the maritime community to achieve the greatest positive impact globally.

Recently, CLIA also partnered with environmental organizations including the World Ocean Council and United for Wildlife in working toward conservation efforts.

Next week, the Secretariat of the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) of the Organization of American States (OAS) will award CLIA with the 2015 Maritime Award of the Americas in the Environmental Waste Management in Cruise Lines category.  The award will be presented to CLIA during the OAS Hemispheric Seminar on Corporate Social Responsibility and Gender Equality in the Port Sector, on April 29, 2016, in Panama City, Panama.
