Early Start for Cathay’s Hong Kong Route Boosts Christchurch Summer Connectivity

(IN SHORT) Cathay Pacific will kick off its seasonal Hong Kong–Christchurch route on 3 November 2025—one month earlier than in previous years—with three weekly flights rising to four during peak months. The schedule extension, following Cathay’s Skytrax #3 global ranking, increases both passenger and cargo capacity, benefiting South Island tourism and perishable exports. Christchurch Airport leaders Justin Watson and Gordon Bevan note the decade-long partnership, recent 8 percent growth, and improved connectivity via the Cathay–Air New Zealand alliance.

(PRESS RELEASE) CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, 2025-Jun-20 — /Travel PR News/ — Christchurch Airport is gearing up for an even busier summer season after Cathay Pacific confirmed it will advance its Hong Kong–Christchurch service by one month. Commencing on 3 November 2025, the airline will operate three round-trip flights each week, increasing to four weekly rotations during the December–February peak. This accelerated launch highlights the South Island’s rising appeal to both business and leisure travellers.

Fresh from being ranked the world’s third-best airline by Skytrax, Cathay Pacific’s extended schedule brings not only more passenger seat capacity but also expanded belly-hold space—vital for shipping premium exports such as seafood and horticultural produce through Hong Kong’s major cargo gateway.

“By choosing to start earlier and add more flights, Cathay Pacific is demonstrating its confidence in Christchurch’s market,” said Justin Watson, Chief Executive of Christchurch Airport. “This move gives our region greater access to Asia and, through the Cathay–Air New Zealand joint venture, seamless onward connections worldwide.”

Gordon Bevan, GM Aeronautical Development at Christchurch Airport, added: “Last summer saw an 8 percent uptick in Cathay Pacific services—this year’s additional 26 flights cements their commitment. These flights bolster our tourism sector and offer exporters reliable, frequent cargo links.”
