Doncaster, England, 2018-Nov-20 — /Travel PR News/ — Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) is proud to support The Children’s Hospital Charity as the airport’s official charity. Through fundraising activity, the airport has raised £15,000 to provide a specialist consulting room at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Kellie Naylor and Rick O’Toole from DSA met Tchad Western, corporate partnership officer at The Children’s Hospital Charity, for a tour of the newly completed specialist consulting room in the Hospital’s Outpatients department, made possible by the fundraising efforts of airport staff and its customers. these activities included raffles, sponsored runs, passenger donations of spare currency and the sale of toy globes in the terminal.
Environment and community officer, Kellie Naylor, said: “It’s great to see the difference that our contributions have made, not only to the care that children receive, but to the way that they receive it. The treatment at Sheffield Children’s Hospital is amongst the best in the UK, and we are proud to support facilities that reflect this quality of care.”
The Airport will now focus on raising a further £15,000 for one of ten proposed treatment bays in the Acute Assessment Unit Ward (AAU) in the Emergency Department. The AAU is for children who require a short stay for future tests, stabilisation, observation or treatment – having arrived via the Emergency Department or from a GP referral – before going onto a ward or going home. These essential bays will give clinicians the space for everything they need, so everyone who visits the Emergency Department will not only just receive the best care but also have the best possible experience.
Corporate and trade partnership executive, Rick O’Toole, said: “We’re really pleased to reach this milestone and seeing the room making a difference to children receiving treatment at the hospital. We will be challenging ourselves to go even further to reach our next fundraising target and we’re already making good progress.
“Our firefighters recently cycled Coast to Coast from Morecambe to Scarborough raising over £2,000 and we will continue to ask our passengers for their support too, so together, we can raise a substantial amount on behalf of this important charity.”
Sheffield Children’s Hospital is a designated Major Trauma Centre, helping up to 200 children a day from South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire with every possible problem imaginable. Originally built to see 32,000 patients a year; the emergency unit now sees 60,000 and is in urgent need of expansion. The new development will help give families who need care, privacy so they can be treated in a hospital built with children in mind and clinicians have everything they need when they need it.
Tchad said: “The hospital sees 269,000 patients a year in need of specialist treatment from across the UK and beyond, which is why it is so important to have world-class facilities that match the world-class care at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The funds raised by Doncaster Sheffield Airport helped to create space and privacy so that children can receive specialist care in the appropriate setting. The money raised will help create a permanent space where clinicians have everything they need, whenever they need it.
“We’ve recently launched our biggest ever appeal, which includes expanding the Emergency Department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and we’re delighted that DSA has committed to help us build a better future and change children’s lives for generations to come.”
