Doncaster, England, 2018-Sep-05 — /Travel PR News/ — Nine firefighters from Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) will set off on the 22nd September to take on a gruelling two-day challenge, cycling the width of the country to raise money for The Children’s Hospital Charity.
The coast to coast challenge begins at Morecambe Bay then across the Yorkshire Dales peaking at 337 metres above sea level as the riders pass through Sedbergh and Leyburn, with an overnight stay at Middleham. Day two passes through the North Yorkshire Moors including the steep climbs and descents of Sutton Bank before finishing in Scarborough, a total of 131 miles (211 kilometres) later.
Brian Mills, Duty Station Manager, Red Watch, said: “We were sold on the idea of the Coast to Coast challenge as a fund raiser by Fire fighter, Adrian Gosnay, a keen cyclist on our team who has also designed the route. All of the fire fighters taking part are taking the challenge very seriously and we will certainly have to work hard to finish.
“We’ve been supporting The Children’s Hospital Charity since April 2016 and their aims of building a comfortable and engaging environment and remaining at the forefront of paediatric care. Every donation small or large really does make a difference to the thousands of children who visit Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Our aim is to smash our £1,000 target with the support of sponsors and would ask people to visit our Just Giving page and help us get there.”
Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) is an avid supporter of the charity, having already raised over £15,000 on behalf of The Children’s Hospital Charity and it will also be putting up a prize for one lucky donor to win return flights for two people to any one of its Flybe destinations. These include Alicante, Jersey, Amsterdam, Belfast, Faro, Malaga and many more.
Alison Riley, Corporate Partnerships Officer of The Children’s Hospital Charity said: “We recently launched our new appeal to raise £14.25 million to transform the Emergency Department and Cancer and Leukaemia Ward, as well as build a brand-new Helipad. Support from corporate partners such as Doncaster Sheffield Airport is essential to achieve these goals and we wish the firefighting team all the best on their coast to coast challenge.”
The Children’s Hospital Charity mascot, Theo the bear, joined one of the training sessions to cheer along the fire officers, and offer some encouragement for their coast to coast challenge on behalf of this worthwhile cause.
The Children’s Hospital Charity make Sheffield Children’s Hospital even better. Donations, sponsorship and fundraising help the organisation deliver above and beyond NHS provision, giving children the best opportunity for recovery.
You can donate and enter the prize draw by visiting the Just Giving page here.
This month also sees the return of the Love to Ride Cycle September campaign, which encourages more people to use a bike for commuting and keeping fit. Last year the DSA fire fighters claimed 1st place nationally and the wider airport team topped the table in South Yorkshire beating off companies under 500 staff. The DSA fire fighters and airport staff will be recording their miles throughout the month of September to try and reclaim top spot in 2018. For more information visit www.lovetoride.net
