Christchurch Airport Unveils Major Terminal Revamp Ahead of Busy Summer Season

The project will introduce 12 new eateries, enhanced retail spaces, upgraded bathrooms, a new parent’s room, a redesigned food court, and a large children’s play area. This marks the airport’s most extensive refurbishment since its initial opening in 2013.

Justin Watson, Chief Executive of Christchurch Airport, expressed enthusiasm about the transformative project: “This major upgrade will elevate our already great terminal to new heights. It will modernize our dining options with a distinct Kiwi flavor and provide enhanced entertainment opportunities.”

Two of the new eateries, Fush and Tātou, will be operated by local entrepreneurs Anton and Jess Matthews and Māia Gooday, known for their community involvement and advocacy for te reo Māori. Anton shared his excitement, stating, “We’re thrilled to showcase manaakitanga at the South Island’s gateway. We’re hiring 30 new staff who will bring a fresh vibe to the Christchurch Airport whānau.”

Adding to the culinary diversity, Shawn Kim and Yong Song, owners of Sushi Platter in the terminal, will introduce three new outlets in the food court. “Hikari will offer ramen and donburi, Mama’s Kitchen will serve Korean street food, and a new version of Sushi Platter will join them,” explained Shawn.

David Cooper, Christchurch Airport’s GM of Customer and Commercial, highlighted the collaboration with global company SSP, marking their entry into the New Zealand market. “SSP’s expertise in airport food and beverage operations across 37 countries will help create a modern, refreshed area that we’re proud to present to our customers.”

SSP will manage seven outlets, including a new bar and restaurant named Portal, a café Fern and Co, and Urban Pantry in the regional departure lounge. Additionally, Digitisation will play a role, enhancing efficiency with self-service kiosks and interactive screens.

Leeann Watson, CEO of Business Canterbury, emphasized the economic benefits: “This investment will attract more visitors to our region, benefiting local businesses and positioning Christchurch and the South Island for future growth.”

Kath Low, Head of Tourism at ChristchurchNZ, highlighted the project’s potential to boost revenue and attract international visitors: “The upgraded facilities will enhance the airport’s role in driving economic and social benefits for Ōtautahi.”

Justin Watson anticipates completion by December, anticipating increased visitor numbers compared to last summer. “Major airlines like Qantas and China Southern are expanding their services, with Qantas adding 175,000 seats and China Southern increasing capacity by 20,000 seats,” he noted.
