CDA welcomes Norwegian Air’s new nonstop service from Chicago O’Hare to Barcelona

CHICAGO, IL, 2019-Feb-19 — /Travel PR News/ — The Chicago Department of Aviation and Norwegian Air today ( 02/15/2019) announced new nonstop service from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) just in time for the busy summer travel season.

This new service from O’Hare begins on June 7, 2019 and will operate four times weekly until October 26, 2019, by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, offering Premium and Economy cabins. Barcelona service complements the existing weekly service offered from O’Hare to London via Norwegian.

This new route to Barcelona represents the sixth new international route announced for O’Hare in 2019 so far, and follows the announcement of new flights to never-before-served destinations Athens (American) and Lisbon (TAP Air Portugal); as well as additional services to Halifax (United), Puerto Vallarta (Volaris) and Quebec City (American) set to begin later this year.

“New direct services to Barcelona and other key international cities from O’Hare are fueling Chicago’s leading connectivity to the world,” said Jamie L. Rhee, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation. “We thank our partners at Norwegian for expanding world class service in Chicago just in time for the summer season. Every new flight added from O’Hare generates additional economic opportunity for our communities, and keeps Chicago better connected to world.”

In 2018, Chicago reached new heights for connectivity by adding a record 17 new international routes from O’Hare, increasing Chicago’s connectivity to new parts of the world. Chicago also became one of only six cities globally to have nonstop passenger air service to all six major inhabited regions of the world – Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, South America.

The establishment of new international flights has a significant impact on the local economy, with new Barcelona service expected to bring a $40 million annual economic impact to the Chicago region.

Norwegian is the world’s fifth largest low-cost airline and carried 37 million passengers in 2018. The airline operates more than 500 routes to over 150 destinations in Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Thailand, Caribbean, North and South America. Norwegian operates one of the world’s youngest and greenest fleets, and has been named the Most Fuel-Efficient Airline on Transatlantic Routes by the International Council on Clean Transportation.
