Pioneering new standards in cargo terminal safety and security
(IN SHORT) Cathay Cargo Terminal in Hong Kong has become the first air cargo terminal in the region to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) with its CCTV system to enhance safety and security. In partnership with Intenseye, the terminal uses AI to monitor safety hazards in real-time, such as workers not following safety protocols or equipment moving too close to people. The system also detects security risks like intrusions. This innovative solution is tailored specifically for the cargo terminal environment, with features like real-time alerts for unattended shipments. Cathay’s commitment to safety has earned recognition, including five awards at the Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Awards. Additionally, AI is being implemented on X-ray machines and will be extended to thermal imaging in 2025.
(PRESS RELEASE) Hong Kong, China, 2024-Dec-3 — /Travel PR News/ — Cathay Cargo Terminal has taken a significant step forward in the integration of technology and safety by becoming the first air cargo terminal in Hong Kong to combine Artificial Intelligence (AI) with its existing CCTV infrastructure. This pioneering move enhances both safety and security monitoring throughout the terminal buildings, ensuring a safer environment for workers and operations.
In collaboration with Intenseye, a prominent provider of AI-powered workplace safety solutions, Cathay Cargo Terminal is utilizing advanced computer vision and AI algorithms to monitor potential safety hazards and security risks in real-time. The AI system leverages the terminal’s current CCTV network to identify a wide range of safety issues, from workers not wearing safety equipment to vehicles or equipment coming too close to workers. It also monitors compliance with pedestrian walkways and work-at-height protocols, while detecting intrusions and other terminal-specific safety concerns.
Cathay Cargo Terminal and Intenseye have tailored the AI solution specifically for the cargo terminal environment. Notable innovations include real-time alerts for unattended shipments at truck docks, ensuring prompt action can be taken if necessary. The system is designed with a focus on Ethical UI principles, offering built-in privacy safeguards while prioritizing the detection of hazards.
The terminal’s commitment to safety and security is already evident, with its exemplary safety culture recently earning five accolades at the Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Awards, including a Gold Award for Safety Management System.
Mark Watts, Chief Operating Officer of Cathay Cargo Terminal, expressed the company’s dedication to maintaining high safety standards: “AI is a vital tool that enhances our current safety management system.
