Budapest Airport reports 8.1% more passengers in April vs. same period last year

The dynamic air traffic growth in Budapest continues: in April, Budapest Airport had 8.1% more passengers than in the same period last year. Flights are operated with better load factors, and the number of air traffic movements (take-offs and landings) also increased. Traffic was again strongest between London and Budapest.

Budapest, 2014-5-13 — /Travel PR News/ — At Ferenc Liszt International Airport, 758 709 passengers were processed in April 2014, that is, this was how many passengers arrived at and departed from the airport of Budapest. This figure exceeds the corresponding data recorded in April 2013 by exactly 8.1%. Interestingly, growth mainly came from non-Schengen traffic: the number of passengers to and from, for instance, Great-Britain, Turkey, Russia, and other non-EU countries has grown fastest. The growth rate may also be due to the fact that flights are operated as per the summer schedule already in April, including the flight of Norwegian Airlines to London Gatwick launched in April, Air Serbia’s daily flight from Belgrade to Budapest, the Paris Orly flight of Transavia France just launched, the increased number of UP’s flights from Tel Aviv, and the re-launched Leeds-Bradford flight of jet2.com.

The trend of the approximately 50%-50% split of traditional and discount passengers also continued, even though the market of traditional carriers grew by a higher rate (10.1%). The top position on the list of destinations is still taken by London (with four airports and five airlines), and the second place is now occupied by Paris with three airports reached by four airlines from Budapest. Brussels was pushed back to third place behind the French capital.

“April figures also reflect that Budapest is becoming a major destination for tourists both within Europe and from elsewhere,” said Kam Jandu, commercial director of Budapest Airport. He added, “As a result of joint efforts with airlines, the 6.7-percent growth of air traffic in Budapest recorded cumulatively from the beginning of this year has been almost twice as high as the EU average of 3.4% so far. I am confident that for the summer peak we can expect further dynamic growth.”
