Bristol Airport staff ran for charity in support of Macmillan Cancer Support

Bristol, UK, 2014-03-24 — /Travel PR News/ — Macmillan Cancer Support benefits from ‘runway run’

Over 100 Bristol Airport staff took to the runway on Wednesday 19 March as part of a charity event which raised more than £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The ‘runway run’ took place after the evening’s last scheduled flight movement at 22:30 and kicked off with a warm-up led by Airport fire-fighters. Participants ran, walked or cycled the length of the 2,011 metre strip in both directions, with the taxiway back to the old terminal building making up an unusual 5k.

As well as staff from departments from across the Airport business, teams from partner organisations including FirstGroup, easyJet, Moneycorp, Thomson, NATS, OCS and Claire’s Accessories also took part.

On completion of the ‘runway run’ Robert Sinclair, Chief Executive Officer at Bristol Airport, said:
“We are delighted to be able to support Macmillan in such a unique way. The runway is at the heart of the Airport’s operations, so we thought it made sense to use this valuable asset to raise money for such a good cause.

“Two thousands metres may not seem far when you are speeding down the runway in an Airbus A320, but it’s a different proposition on foot on a chilly night in March! It was a great effort from all concerned, whether taking part, marshalling or ensuring the runway was ready for the resumption of normal operations first thing the following morning.”

Macmillan Cancer Support was chosen as Bristol Airport’s charity of the year for 2014 in a vote by staff. Macmillan improves the lives of people and families affected by cancer, providing nurses, therapists and independent advice when it is needed the most.

Each year Bristol Airport selects a local charity, voted and selected by the Airport staff. Since 1999 over £220,000 has been raised and donated to local charities through various fund raising activities.

Kaeti Morrison, Macmillan Cancer Support said:
“We are thrilled to have the support of Bristol Airport throughout 2014 and to be involved in such an exciting lead event for the partnership. I’d like to thank everyone involved for all of their efforts in organising the event and for raising such a fantastic amount. The money will help us to ensure that no-one faces cancer alone and that everyone gets the support they need after a cancer diagnosis for themselves, a family member, friend or colleague.”
