“Baobab: Tree of Generations” exhibit takes root at Hartsfield-Jackson

ATLANTA, 2012-08-30 — /travelprnews.com/ — The baobab tree, also known as the “tree of life,” has taken root in a new art exhibit at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The tree, made famous in movies such as Disney’s “The Lion King,” is prominently featured in “Baobab: Tree of Generations,” an exhibit of work by Canadian photographer Elaine Ling.

“This exhibit allows us to bring the world closer to travelers — one image at a time,” said David Vogt, Airport Art Program manager. “Ling’s portraits brilliantly capture the beauty of the baobab trees and will hopefully inspire others to see the trees in person for the first time, a second and a third.”

These eye-catching, black-and-white portraits of the baobab showcase nature’s resilience and beauty, even in extreme and sometimes unforgivably dry conditions. The images also feature the various forms of life found in remote and infertile regions of Africa, Australia and Madagascar.

“These miraculous giants are one of the largest living things on the planet and have a potential life span of more than a thousand years,” Ling said of the trees, which can grow to be as high as 98 feet tall. “They are great friends to their human neighbors, providing an ever-renewing source of textiles, netting, baskets and roofing. Their nutritious fruit has many medicinal properties.”

“Baobab: Tree of Generations” will be displayed in the Atrium Gallery until October 3.
