Muharraq, Bahrain, 2015-6-17 — /Travel PR News/ — His Excellency the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT) Engineer Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed announced the awarding of the second Enabling Works Package for the new BIA Passenger Terminal Building, worth BD10 million, to local contractors G.P. Zachariades Engineering and Construction Company. The enabling works schedule follows on from the signing of the first Enabling Works Package last February.
On the occasion of the contract signing, the Ministry received a total of 12 submissions for the second Enabling Works Package and were thoroughly assessed on their technical merit and value; the appointed bidder provided the most competitive proposal in terms of budget, timelines and overall implementation. The tendering process supports the project’s schedule and the Ministry anticipates the awarding of 7 additional contracts by the end of the year, at a combined value of over BD300m.
Awarding of the contract signifies the start of the construction works on the new terminal building which is anticipated for the last quarter of 2015. The Airport Modernization Program (AMP) makes part of the country’s long-term strategy to develop our aviation infrastructure and industry capabilities to sustainably serve the needs of the future.
The scope of work under the latest Enabling Works contract includes the construction of a new Fire Station and associated support infrastructure north of the runway to replace the existing building which will be demolished; building of a new access security gate – Supergate – at the end of the airfield fitted with the latest technology and equipment that will be the main airside access point for airport staff working on the airfield; and the re-provision of aviation fueling facilities for Bahrain Aviation Fueling Company including offices, maintenance workshops and operational equipment in three key areas to enable continuity in efficient and safe refueling of aircraft.
The second phase of the Enabling Works will kick off in July 2015 and will be completed by May 2016.
The combined scope for both Enabling Works Packages includes the relocation of all existing utilities and facilities away from the footprint of the passenger terminal to facilitate construction on the new 206,000 square meter BIA Passenger Terminal Building.
