• After “AIRcelerate”, a dual bachelor’s degree program in computer science starts in the fall of 2019
  • Employees with practical experience are being sought after
  • Austrian Airlines invests in professions with a future

VIENNA, Austria, 2019-Mar-20 — /Travel PR News/ — In filling positions for specialized staff with the right talents, the recruiting strategy of Austrian Airlines is focusing on dual training programs combining theoretical studies with practical experience. Last year the airline first initiated the seven-semester “AIRcelerate” bachelor’s study program for future aviation managers. The dual students are now currently getting a feel for day-to-day business operations in practice based on job rotations in operational and commercial areas of Austrian Airlines such as flight operations, sales and network planning.

A further training program will already begin in the autumn of 2019 in line with this system. Within the context of a dual study program in computer science in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien, the period of study will be divided between practical training phases at Austrian Airlines and theoretical instruction at the university of applied sciences. The contents of the curriculum corresponding to the established bachelor’s degree program in computer science at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien in Vienna. “In this way students can combine theory and practice in an optimal manner”, says Corinna Conrads, Head of Talent Management & Recruiting at Austrian Airlines.

In addition to the traditional contents of computer science studies, the six-semester bachelor’s degree program will also provide all skills students require to successfully find their way around an IT system environment of an aviation company. During lecture breaks, students will complete a customized trainee program at Austrian Airlines at Vienna Airport. Students will acquire the requisite know-how in projects and workshops to ideally start working for Austrian Airlines right after the conclusion of their studies.

In 2019, Austrian Airlines will make it possible for five students to participate in the dual training program, and up to eight more students will be added in 2020. The airline is also searching for up to eight students to take part in the next generation of the “AIRcelerate” program in 2020 and gain practical experience at Austrian Airlines.

“We are investing in new employees for our IT operations. No other IT qualifications are necessary to take part in the dual study program in computer science except for a high school (“Matura”) or equivalent secondary school diploma and the interest to try out something new. The dual students will directly develop their skills and strengths with us here in the company. A whole lot of exciting topics and projects await them”, says a pleased Stefan Matzelle, Head of IT at Austrian Airlines. Recently, a “Center of Excellence Digital Workplace” was established under his leadership at Austrian Airlines in Vienna, which assumes responsibility for and coordinates all issues relating to digital workplaces in the entire Lufthansa Group.

Applicants for the dual studies in computer science can be submitted at www.austrian.com/bewerbung until May 31, 2019.
