2013-09-05 — /travelprnews.com/ — In addition to its promotion of top-class sport, the Lufthansa Group also supports athletes within its own ranks. As an active contribution to protection of health, the Group has long supported its employees with a diverse offer of sports – providing an ideal balance to the various requirements which career and family demand of the employees every day.
Around 7,000 Lufthansa employees and several thousand external personnel are active in the various Lufthansa sports clubs (LSV) at eleven locations. The first LSV was already founded in 1956 in Hamburg. Today there is a choice of 61 sports and activities, from hang-gliding and amateur radio, via Skat (German card game), right through to therapeutic gymnastics. By far the largest numbers of sport fans are attracted to football, fitness and golf. For many of them the main attraction is the pleasure of movement and experiencing it together. Nevertheless, the competitive element is not forgotten: the keen sportsmen and women compete in company championships, and some groups regularly successfully take part in Airline World and European Championships.
Since 2009 the “Lufthanseaten Laufen” (“Lufthansa Employees Run”) promotion has been inviting employees to get a breath of fresh air and clear the head. Part of the initiative, besides running with colleagues, are also appearances of top-class German athletes, information events and the offer of health checks. At the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge on 12th June 2013 in Frankfurt, with around 1,200 employees, Lufthansa had the third largest team. Since 2009, as title sponsor, Lufthansa also supports the Frankfurt Half-Marathon, in which more than 350 Lufthansa employees started this year.
Even outside its own ranks, the Lufthansa Group has close links with sport. For example, the Group is a national sponsor of the Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe (German Sports Aid Foundation), co-partner of the German of Olympic Sports Federation, partner of the German Handicapped Sports Federation, partners of the German Football Association and, in addition, promotes specific sports events, clubs and associations.
