Airport Authority Hong Kong recognized HKIA’s business partners and tenants with awards for their exceptional efforts in waste management

Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA), hopes that the airport community can continue to make concerted efforts for the environment, becoming a role model for other airports around the world as well as local industries

HONG KONG, 2018-Mar-30 — /Travel PR News/ — The third Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Environmental Management Recognition Scheme, held by Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) to acknowledge strong environmental performance by HKIA’s business partners and tenants, came to a successful close today as a total of 102 business partners and tenants were presented with awards commending their exceptional efforts in waste management.

The award presentation ceremony was officiated by Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment; Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of the AA; Wilson Fung, Executive Director, Corporate Development of the AA; and Cissy Chan, Executive Director, Commercial of the AA.

Mr Lam said, “We selected waste management as the theme of this edition of the Scheme to continue to recognise the Environment Bureau’s policy. The Scheme aims to help participants be better prepared for the Government’s introduction of the Municipal Solid Waste Charging Scheme, and to encourage wider implementation of effective waste reduction and recycling measures. I hope that we can continue to make concerted efforts for the environment, become a role model for other airports around the world as well as local industries, and support the sustainable development of HKIA into a green airport for Hong Kong.”

Mr Wong said, “More than just a place to serve visitors from all over the world, the HKIA is also a place where over 70,000 staff work together every day and which can be described as a microcosm of society. Waste management is not only one of the most pressing environmental problems faced by the community of Hong Kong, but also one of the major environmental challenges for the HKIA. I am delighted to learn that the AA is willing and able to implement waste separation, food recycling and food waste recovery to reduce the waste generated by the airport.”

Tenants and business partners were judged on their performance in waste management according to their level of waste reduction achieved and were accredited with either “Good” or “Excellent” levels of attainment. This year, 33 restaurants, 43 retail shops, 21 offices and five cleaning contractors were commended for their outstanding waste management performance. These organisations each developed waste management plans and set targets for waste reduction and recycling to reduce and prevent waste in daily operations. Restaurants that received awards implemented measures to reduce food waste or participate in food donation programmes, while most retail shops adopted measures to minimise packing waste. Companies in the office sector encouraged their staff to reuse materials such as envelopes and decorative materials. Cleaning contractors provided waste management training to their frontline staff to enhance skills in waste handling and separation.

A Grand Award was also presented to one organisation from each sector that achieved excellent performance by implementing a range of good waste management practices and also demonstrated commitment to future improvement. The Grand Award winners for each category were:

  • Food and beverage sector – Catalina’s Restaurant
  • Retail sector – The Magic of Hong Kong Disneyland
  • Office sector – Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd.
  • Cleaning contractor sector – Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd.

The ceremony also featured the popular icon “Big Waster” and actors who performed a drama to encourage members of the public to go green in their daily operations and lives.
