Wider catering selection on short- and medium-haul flights
BERLIN, 2014-11-14 — /Travel PR News/ — On flights lasting 90 minutes or more, the German full service carrier will soon be offering sweet and savoury snack variations in addition to its existing selection of gourmet meals from Sansibar Sylt and complimentary snacks. The Germans are famous for their bread the world over, and airberlin remains true to this tradition with its new range of sandwiches: the Holstein Brown Rye is decked out with turkey ham, cream cheese, and a crunchy mix of vegetables. The Club Sandwich consists of chicken strips, turkey bacon, egg, mayonnaise and tomato between slices of whole bread. For vegetarians, the airline now offers pretzel bread with Swiss Emmental cheese, cream cheese with chives, and a mixed salad. The price for all sandwiches will be five euros. Also new are the chocolate and blueberry muffins at two euros each. For the first time, airberlin will also be offering muesli at three euros per serving.
‘We also have a very special offer for our on-board guests in the evenings: on flights to Germany, we will be having a “happy hour” from 7 p.m. onwards (subject to availability). This means that all available snacks will cost one euro less, and gourmet meals from our Zanzibar range will be even more affordable at two euros less each,’ states Thomas Ney, head of guest experience at airberlin.
‘Sweet or savoury?’: a question always heard from our flight attendants on flights within Germany, will now also become a common occurrence on many medium-haul flights. This means that airberlin guests will also be receiving a complimentary sweet or savoury snack on these flights. Before ten in the morning, guests will be able to choose between a warm pretzel bun or a warm raisin bun. On flights later in the day, flight attendants will be handing out savoury snacks such as crisps, or sweet snacks such as chocolate bars.
‘We want our guests to enjoy their stay on board. Particularly businesspeople use the time on the plane to take a short break. With our selection, each guest can relax while enjoying a small snack or tucking into a warm meal. Naturally, we will also continue to offer our complimentary selection of cold and warm drinks and a sweet or savoury snack,’ explains Ney.
The most popular gourmet menu on board continues to be the currywurst (fried pork sausage with curry seasoning), of which 150,000 servings are sold annually. The top three among the non-alcoholic drinks are mineral water, coke, and orange juice. These are closely followed by the classic tomato juice, of which airberlin guests drink 670,000 litres each year. At the top of the list of alcoholic beverages in the Economy Class is beer, followed by sparkling wine and white wine.
Good news for all those who love the airberlin chocolate heart: in future, airberlin will also be handing them out to guests on many medium-haul flights. Up till recently, the chocolate heart was given out to passengers as a parting gift when they left the plane after a short-haul flight.
