Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l recognized Sun Country Captain Eric Herman with Aviation Security Award

Maple Grove Pilot Recognized for Contributions to Improve Crewmember Security

WASHINGTON, D.C., 2018-Aug-07 — /Travel PR News/ — At its 64th Air Safety Forum in Washington, D.C., today (August 02, 2018), the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) recognized Sun Country Captain Eric Herman with its Aviation Security Award for his valued guidance and extensive work to promote aviation security.

A recognized security expert and advocate, Captain Herman is a trusted representative of the Association at industry events and a frequent panel moderator at security forums. He rose through the ranks of volunteer positions at Sun Country before the ALPA Air Safety Organization gained his talents, first as Security Council vice chair and currently as Security Council chair.

“Through his dedicated efforts, Captain Herman has served as an influential and respected advocate for all pilots by providing line-pilot input into security issues, including Known Crewmember checkpoints and at pilot hotels,” said Capt. Tim Canoll, ALPA president. “His commitment to his fellow pilots and aviation security overall have been instrumental in achieving results that will be felt throughout ALPA and our industry for years to come. It is an honor to recognize his accomplishments with our Association’s highest security award.”

In 1987, Captain Herman started his aviation career at a small flight school in Crystal, Minn. His first airline position was with Great Lakes Airlines as a pilot. He transitioned to being a Boeing 727 flight engineer and joined Sun Country in 1998, where he has served as a ground and simulator training instructor, check airman, and B-737 captain.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin–River Falls, Capt. Herman has assisted with developing several security courses for which he received a Presidential Citation from ALPA in 2016. Currently flying the Boeing 737-800 based out of Minneapolis-St. Paul, he also holds a flight engineer certificate and is type rated on the Boeing 727 and the BE-1900.
