Aberdeen, Scotland, 2018-Mar-22 — /Travel PR News/ — Aberdeen International Airport and CHC Helicopter have, today, announced their collaborative Runway Run event which will be taking off this summer. The Runway Run will give 300 participants the rare opportunity to run the length of the airport’s runway at midnight while raising funds for three local charities.
CHC Helicopter and Aberdeen International Airport are co-sponsoring the event which has been co-ordinated between airport operations teams and Aberdeen-based CHC Helicopter Pilot, Captain Ryan Broadhurst.
Ryan and the airport team are encouraging runners of all abilities to take part in the Aberdeen Airport Runway Run, which will begin at midnight on June 30. Runners taking part in the event will run two lengths of the runway which equates to a 3.5km run.
Ryan said: “I’ve always thought the Aberdeen Airport runway would be ideal for a charity run. It’s a reasonable 3.5km distance but people probably don’t realise there is a bit of an incline as you head out on the southern end of the runway, so it’s pretty challenging, without being too hard.”
“Running has become increasingly popular as a means of getting fit. We’ve limited spaces to only 300 and we anticipate a lot of demand to take part.”
Runners can take part as individuals in the Fun Run or enter as part of a team of 12 with all the times aggregated in the Team Marathon. Transponder chip technology will be used to accurately time each individual and the results will be displayed in the CHC terminal at the airport once the runway has been vacated.
Carol Benzie, Managing Director of Aberdeen International Airport said: “We are very excited to be able to announce our Runway Run event in collaboration with CHC Helicopter. The event will offer runners, of all levels, the opportunity to take part in a truly exclusive and rare running event. Our last runway run event was hugely popular and this year’s run will accommodate five times the number of runners. We therefore hope that the event will help to raise considerable funds for three fantastic charities in Aberdeen.’
CHC regional director Mark Abbey, said: “Ryan has been passionate about putting the Runway Run together and we are delighted to support him and wish him well. We’ve had tremendous assistance and backing from the Aberdeen Airport team. Everyone has worked very hard to make this happen.
“Aberdeen is a busy airport and safety has to be the top priority at all times, but we also know that this event is likely to be very popular and I hope people take advantage of this very rare opportunity to run the runway.”
Entrance fees are £25 per person with a minimum fundraising commitment of £100. Prizes will also be available for participants including a flight in a CHC helicopter aircraft for the top five highest fundraisers. Participants can sign up to run the runway or find out more about the event at www.aberdeenrunwayrun.co.uk.
