2012-09-06 — /travelprnews.com/ — Using water as inspiration, Belfast artist Deirdre Robb has created a unique sculpture installation entitled ‘swell’ that will be on display in the George Best Belfast City Airport as part of the inaugural East Belfast Arts Festival.

Colour and form have an immediate impact on the large-scale artwork that conveys a sense of space, light and drama. The depth of blues and green and transparent nature of materials have created a striking and dramatic effect. The tactile nature to the work makes you want to reach out and touch it.The inspiration for the work originates from Robb’s experience of growing up near Hazelbank where she played by the sea as a child and teenager. Robb states ‘through the movement and power of the sea, I experienced an energy that can be comforting and almost hypnotic, yet in contrast I am aware of its power that also has a dangerous side. It can be deep, forceful and precarious. My idea for this work was to capture a transient moment when the flow of the water is reaching a peak and then suspend in mid-air almost like a frozen moment in time. What is also important to me when I create an artwork is that people can relate to with their own experiences and memories and I hope they will with this sculpture’.

So perhaps it is not totally surprising that the work has ended up in this unusual setting of an active and bustling airport. After all, for most people when you go to an airport it is all about getting away for the most enjoyable part of the year and a trip to the sun and the sea and this art is a timely reminder of what they are going to or coming from as the summer season draws to a close.

Katy Best, Commercial and Marketing Director at George Best Belfast City Airport said:

“We are delighted, as principal sponsors of the East Belfast Arts Festival, to be hosting this unique sculpture by renowned Belfast artist Deirdre Robb.

“Passengers will be treated to this captivating installation when they enter the main concourse of the terminal. It should certainly add to the customer experience.”
