Veggies harvested for Winnipeg Harvest’s for Grow-A-Row program

Winnipeg, Canada, 2014-9-15 — /Travel PR News/ — Today (September 10, 2014), staff at Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) harvested their vegetable garden grown for Winnipeg Harvest’s Grow-A-Row program, marking their 19th year participating in program. This year’s garden produced 3,612 lbs of vegetables, bringing WAA’s grand total to 38,427 lbs of vegetables grown for Winnipeg Harvest over 19 years.

The response has been amazing for Winnipeg Harvest’s Grow-A-Row program over the last 28 years. People all across the city and in rural areas have taken part including WAA who has harvested a bountiful garden at the airport for almost two decades.

“One of our guiding principles at Winnipeg Airports Authority has been to be a responsible member of the community,” said Barry Rempel, President & CEO of WAA. “It is with great pride that, for nearly two decades, we’ve been able to team up with an organization who reflects that desire to serve this community and make our city a better place.”

“The extra produce that WAA has produced over the past 19 years and donated to Winnipeg Harvest’s Grow-A-Row program has meant so much to thousands of Manitoba families in need. WAA is a model for corporate responsibility in giving back to the community. We appreciate the continued support of WAA and their green thumb efforts along with the six businesses that planted seeds this year. It’s great to see local commerce rooted in giving”, says Gordon Pollard, Board member, Winnipeg Harvest.

About the Grow-A-Row program
Ron and Eunice O’Donovan established the Grow-A-Row program 28 years ago. The married couple of 54 years produced more potatoes in their backyard garden than their family could consume and so instead of disposing of them, they donated them to Winnipeg Harvest. Their idea was to get backyard and large lot gardeners to take all of their extra produce and donate it to Winnipeg Harvest. As of 2010 the program in Manitoba alone has raised more than 3.5 million pounds of vegetables. The Grow-A-Row program for the Winnipeg Harvest Food Bank was later adopted by Food Banks Canada to support all of Canada’s food banks. It’s also duplicated by thousands of food banks across North America.
