Local residents may notice temporary construction activity as weekend runway closure goes into effect
INDIANAPOLIS – 2012-10-15 — /travelprnews.com/ — Beginning today at 5 p.m., rehabilitation work will start on runway 3-21, the sole runway at Eagle Creek Airpark (EYE), located just south of Eagle Creek Park on the northwest side of Indianapolis. The work will continue through the weekend, with the runway reopening no later than noon on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Citizens with questions or concerns about the construction can call 317.487.5089.
The work, which involves milling and overlaying, could be completed as early as Sunday if progress is not slowed by precipitation.
“During this process, nearby residents may notice construction noise. We regret any inconvenience created as we maintain the integrity of Eagle Creek’s runway, which was last overhauled in 1996,” said Mike Medvescek, senior director of operations for the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA).
After a pavement-curing process of 30 days, during which the airport will operate normally, grooving work will mark the completion of the project, extending the runway’s utility by at least 15 years with regular maintenance. Although runway grooving can create noticeable construction noise, this procedure will be limited to a three-night period.
EYE, which averages approximately 90 daily aircraft operations, is one of five reliever airports owned and operated by the IAA. Reliever airports play an important role in supporting the local economy while improving operational efficiency at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) by diverting general aviation traffic from the region’s commercial airport.
