WAA welcomed more than 1.1 million travellers in the first three months of 2019, a 7.5% increase over the same period in 2018

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, 2019-Apr-30 — /Travel PR News/ — Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) started 2019 with another strong quarter, driven primarily by an increase in passengers boarded along with increased cargo traffic.

Winnipeg Richardson International Airport welcomed more than 1.1 million travellers in the first three months of 2019, a 7.5 percent increase over the same period in 2018. Closing the quarter, March passenger traffic was up 9.5 percent year over year.

Commercial air freight traffic grew as well in the first quarter with the airport hosting more flights, resulting in a 9 percent increase from the first quarter of 2018 in average aircraft takeoff weight, a key metric for measuring cargo performance.

First quarter consolidated revenue for WAA was $36.2 million compared to $34.1 million for the same period in 2018. Earnings before interest, depreciation and taxes were $18.0 million for the first quarter of 2019, versus $17.3 million for the first quarter of 2018.

“Demand for air service in this region remains strong and we continue to work with our partners to deliver on the needs of our customers,” said Barry Rempel, President and CEO of WAA. “Whether you are leaving on a family vacation, a business trip or it’s accepting delivery of your latest online purchase, the airport continues to connect our community to the rest of Canada and the world.”

WAA continues to invest in the airport campus to drive growth. Construction continues on the $27.0 million Ground Services Equipment Building set to open this fall. Work has also commenced on the rehabilitation of one of the airport’s runways, as we proceed with upgrades to the air terminal’s baggage handling system. In the coming months, our community will also note work beginning on the addition of new retail and concessions in response to feedback from travellers.
