Travel is All the Rage at Boston Logan’s Newest Art Exhibit
Terminal E display explores the use of design to transform travel through the age

BOSTON – 2012-12-13 — /travelprnews.com/ — Design for travel is all around us whether we realize it or not. For decades, designers, artists and engineers have worked behind-the-scenes envisioning, planning and developing ways to make our travel experience a more enjoyable and stylish one. Boston Logan International Airport’s newest public art exhibit Getting There: Design for Travel in the Modern Age enlightens the traveler on ways design has made the travel experience more comfortable. The year-long display of travel-related images and objects is located in Terminal E, and is co-presented by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), Design Museum Boston and the Grand Circle Gallery in Boston.

“Art at the airport is a critical component of customer service for us,” said Ed Freni, Director of Aviation for Massport. “It helps reduce the stress levels some people associate with travel, and the travel theme of this exhibition makes the airport a perfect host venue.” Massport established Logan Airport’s public art program in the early 1980s.

The exhibition features planes, trains and ships, and is set against a backdrop of vintage travel posters. Visitors can journey through the early days of flight; the golden age of cruise and the super-sized ships of today; and the experiences of the contemporary traveler in a deregulated industry. They can even catch a glimpse into the future of travel.

Additionally, the display chronicles the design evolution of travel accessories, such as noise-canceling headphones, designs of airplane seats, train interiors, and silverware. Drawings, models, and prototypes from companies such as Bose, Samsonite, Teague, and IDEO, highlight projects that creatively address some of the challenges of travel.

“We are thrilled to bring this exciting exhibit to Logan Airport,” said Sam Aquillano, Co-Founder of Design Museum Boston. “It helps us accomplish one of our key goals: to showcase and make great design accessible to the public. The millions of people who pass through Terminal E will have an opportunity to see this wonderful show about travel – and design.”

Getting There: Design for Travel in the Modern Age is located pre-security on the arrivals level of Terminal E through November, 2013.
