The World Heritage city of Ayutthaya, Thailand to host the Ayutthaya Marathon 2013 on 15 December

Ayutthaya, Thailand, 2013-11-27 — /travelprnews.com/ — The World Heritage city of Ayutthaya is set to become unique running grounds for runners from all over the world during the Ayutthaya Marathon 2013 on 15 December.

In celebrating the Thai-Japanese relationship in Ayutthaya on the occasion of “100 Years of the Japanese Association in Thailand”, the Ayutthaya Provincial Administration, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Unique Running have joined hands to organise the marathon as part of the many activities of the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya World Heritage Fair 2013, which will take place during 13 – 22 December.

This is the first Ayutthaya Marathon to be held, and runners from all over the world are expected to take up the challenge. The event is open to everyone from professionals to fun runners, and the range of age categories and distances will ensure that competitors of any fitness level can join and run at their own pace.

The event will feature a 42.195 km (26 mile) full marathon, a 21.1 km (13.1 mile) half marathon, a 10 km (6.2 mile) mini marathon, and a 3.5 km (2.17 mile) fun run. With the Ayutthaya Historical Park as the backdrop, the marathon’s route allows runners to take in the cultural sights, historic buildings and sculptures of the ancient capital of Ayutthaya while enjoying the pleasant weather of Thailand’s cooler season.

All registered runners who complete their event will be awarded a commemorative medal and a especially designed T-shirt. Part of the event’s proceeds will be allocated to support the preservation of the Ayutthaya Historical Park.

Marathon running is an activity that has enjoyed increasing popularity in Thailand over the last few years and events; such as, the Bangkok or Chiang Mai Marathon are now fixtures in the international running calendar. Unique Running, Thailand’s premier running organisation, has already helped to arrange safe and successful running events in Khao Yai and Sukhothai.

The Ayutthaya Marathon looks set to be a popular draw because the historical environs of the city make it a unique venue. The Ayutthaya Historical Park was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 and is famous for its temples, chedis and statues, so there are many attractions to enjoy, even for visitors who don’t pack their running shoes.

The 15 December marathon is just one event to be enjoyed at the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya World Heritage Fair 2013 which this year is being held at several locations around the Ayutthaya Historical Park.

As well as the marathon itself, visitors will be able to enjoy celebrations and displays of traditional Thai culture, customs, and cuisine. The Fair aims to raise awareness of the need to preserve Thailand’s rich heritage and will culminate in a nightly light and sound presentation, depicting the glorious past of Ayutthaya, at Wat Mahathat.
