Silicon Valley’s Airport Staff Serve Not Your Ordinary Plane Food to Family Supportive Housing Residents

Meal Inspired by Airport Employee Published Cookbook

SAN JOSE, 2013-02-04 — /travelprnews.com/ — Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) teams up with Family Supportive Housing today to prepare and serve dinner to residents with a meal inspired by Airport Family Cookbook: Not Your Ordinary Plane Food, a collection of family and favorite recipes from SJC employees.

As part of the City of San José’s 2012 Combined Charitable Giving Campaign, SJC staff pledged over $8,000 and some 150 volunteer hours to support community members in need. The 2012 publication of acookbook, planned by the Airport Recognition Committee and supported with Airport employee recognition funds and personal donations, sparked the idea for Airport staff to share a healthy and tasty meal with residents of Family Supportive Housing.

“I’m proud of Airport staff’s efforts to put others before self and seek creative ways of supporting the community we serve year-round,” said SJC Director of Aviation Bill Sherry. “Airport staff is extremely hard-working, committed to organizational goals, and creative, too. Airport Family Cookbook: Not Your Ordinary Plane Food embodies the family spirit, sharing and commitment to fun that Airport employees demonstrate on a daily basis. Staff is taking their generosity a step further by sharing it with others who will really appreciate it.”

Airport staff will feed over 100 people today at Family Supportive Housing, which is currently full with 49 adults and 68 children (60 under age 13). The menu features 15-Minute Chicken and Rice, a kid-friendly macaroni and cheese dish, green salad, Grandma’s Brownies and Pineapple Cupcakes, just a few of some 350 family and favorite recipes included in the cookbook and submitted by Airport staff.

According to Family Supportive Housing Development Coordinator Chloe Shipp, “The mission of Family Supportive Housing is to provide shelter and supportive services to homeless families in Santa ClaraCounty, and to empower them to move from homelessness to self-sufficiency in our community. With the generosity of individuals and agencies, such as Mineta San José International Airport, we are able to give our residents a break from the routine of everyday living and stretch the shelter’s limited funds to feed, clothe and provide other supportive services to our residents.”

Just like SJC, Family Supportive Housing recently constructed and moved into a brand new facility located at 692 King Road in San Jose. This modern and welcoming five-story building, three of which are resident floors, securely houses up to 35 families at a time. The facility offers staff offices, a medical wing, classrooms, a computer lab and library, common areas, the Voyager Daycare, and a commercial kitchen and family-style dining room. To volunteer, contact Christi Moyer-Kelly at 408-926-8885 ext. 226 or volunteer@familysupportivehousing.org.

In addition to pledging over $8,000 to local and national non-profits, teams of SJC employees also sorted and packed food at Second Harvest Food Bank, supported the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot by registering participants and assisting on event day, and created gift baskets overflowing with useful items such as gift cards, toys, books, clothing, hygiene products, and non-perishable goods for other local non-profit agencies, all in November and December 2012.
