(NEWS) SHANNON, County Clare, Ireland, 2026-Aug-31 — /Travel PR News/ — Passengers passing through Shannon Airport over the next two weeks can add an unexpected cultural stop to their journey: more than 100 of Ireland’s strongest press photographs from 2025 have gone on display in the terminal’s check-in area.
The free exhibition, organised by Press Photographers Ireland CLG and hosted by The Shannon Airport Group, opened on 31 August and will remain at the airport until 14 September 2026 as part of its regional tour. The collection brings together winning and shortlisted work from the 2026 AIB Press Photographer of the Year Awards, covering the stories, people and events that shaped Ireland during the previous year.
More than a hundred images across 11 categories
The exhibition spans 11 competition categories, including News, Politics, Sports Action, Sports Feature, Arts and Entertainment, Daily Life & People, Portrait, Nature & the Environment, Reportage, Multimedia and Public Relations. Taken together, the images create a visual record of Ireland in 2025, moving between major news events, political moments, sporting drama and quieter scenes of everyday life.
The awards are designed to bring the work of Ireland’s professional press photographers to a wider audience. Press Photographers Ireland says more than 1,000 entries are typically considered by the judging panel, which selects first, second and third places across the main categories as well as recipients of several special awards.
Record seventh overall title for Mark Condren
Mark Condren of Mediahuis Ireland, who was named AIB Press Photographer of the Year 2026, attended the Shannon opening and spoke about his career and the stories behind some of his winning photographs. Press Photographers Ireland confirmed that the 2026 title was Condren’s record seventh overall win, extending a run of victories that has made him one of the most decorated photographers in the competition’s history.
The Shannon Airport Group said Condren received awards across six categories in this year’s competition. His winning portfolio sits alongside work by photographers from across Ireland, giving travelers a broad view of the country through images created for newspapers, agencies and other media outlets.
Niall Kearns, airport director at Shannon Airport, said press photographers play an important role in documenting history as it unfolds, adding that the airport was proud to make the collection accessible to passengers and visitors.
An airport becomes part of the exhibition tour
Hosting the show in a check-in hall gives the exhibition an audience beyond the usual gallery visitor. Travelers can encounter the work before a flight, while people coming to the terminal specifically for the exhibition can visit without entering the secure departures area.
Dan Linehan, president of Press Photographers Ireland CLG, said the collection demonstrates the continuing importance of truthful imagery, technical skill and creativity at a time when AI-generated content is adding new questions around authenticity. He described the photographs as a record of the towns, villages, events, news and people that made up Ireland in 2025.
For Shannon Airport, the exhibition adds a temporary cultural attraction to the passenger journey while giving a touring national photography show exposure to an audience that includes local visitors as well as domestic and international travelers. The display is free to visit in the airport’s check-in area through 14 September.
