Royal Caribbean is taking Bikini Bottom to sea in 2027, adding a new production of The SpongeBob Musical to the entertainment lineup aboard Hero of the Seas when the fourth Icon Class ship begins sailing from Miami in August.

The cruise line says the show will be the first at-sea production inspired by the Broadway musical and the Nickelodeon animated series. It will be staged in the Royal Theater as part of Hero’s family-focused entertainment programme, bringing SpongeBob and other Bikini Bottom characters into a reworked shipboard version of the story.

A Broadway-inspired production adapted for the Royal Theater

The original stage musical is based on the animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg, with a book by Kyle Jarrow and a production conceived by Tina Landau. Concord Theatricals lists the show as a full-length musical that follows SpongeBob and his friends as they race to save Bikini Bottom from a looming volcanic disaster.

The Broadway production received 12 Tony Award nominations and won the 2018 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design of a Musical. Its score draws on songs by artists including Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, The Flaming Lips, They Might Be Giants and other contributors.

Royal Caribbean says its version will retain the familiar themes of friendship, unlikely heroes and the race to save Bikini Bottom while reshaping the material for a family audience at sea. Christi Coachman, the cruise line’s vice president of entertainment, said the production is intended to bring multiple generations together while using the ship’s theatrical technology and production capabilities.

Hero of the Seas builds around family entertainment

Hero of the Seas is scheduled to arrive in Miami in August 2027 and will become Royal Caribbean’s fourth Icon Class ship. The vessel will sail seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, with every voyage including a call at Perfect Day CocoCay in The Bahamas.

Western Caribbean itineraries are expected to include destinations such as Cozumel, Mexico, and Roatan, Honduras, while Eastern Caribbean sailings will feature ports including Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.

The ship is being developed around eight neighborhoods and a large concentration of family, dining and recreation spaces. Announced attractions include Crown’s Edge, a skywalk and zip-line experience suspended 154 feet above the ocean, and Category 6, Royal Caribbean’s waterpark concept at sea.

Hero will also have nine pools, including the new Coconut Cove pool and the adults-only Hideaway area, plus 28 dining venues. The food lineup is set to include Orleans Parrish Supper Club, the immersive Royal Railway – Hero Station train-car dining concept and a new venue for hands-on cooking classes.

New family accommodation joins the Icon Class formula

Among the new accommodation concepts is the three-deck Ultimate Family Treehouse, designed with a rooftop terrace, whirlpool and a two-deck teen space. The addition continues Royal Caribbean’s strategy of pairing large-scale attractions with room categories aimed specifically at multigenerational family groups.

The SpongeBob production gives Hero another family-oriented point of difference before its 2027 debut, while also extending a Broadway title beyond land-based theatres into the cruise setting for the first time. Travelers can find current ship and itinerary details through Royal Caribbean, with additional company updates available through the Royal Caribbean Press Center.
