Oslo Airport receives record grant

2013-04-30 — /travelprnews.com/ — Enova has awarded Oslo Lufthavn AS two different grants totalling about NOK 35 million. This is record grant from Enova, a public enterprise whose purpose is to promote environmentally friendly restructuring of energy consumption and energy generation in Norway.

The NOK 30.6 million grant was awarded for OSL’s investment in passive and low-energy buildings now under construction in connection with the extension of the current terminal. The NOK 4.2 million grant was awarded for the airport’s commitment to snow cooling and the introduction of this newly developed energy technology.

State Secretary Ane Hansdatter Kismul attended the presentation of Enova’s grant. OSL’s goal is to save approximately 9 GWh, equivalent to the annual power consumption of 450 households.

The new terminal at Gardermoen will cover a total of 265,000 square meters, and all new buildings must be constructed to meet a so-called passive level, with low energy consumption. Oslo Airport aspires to be a pioneer in energy solutions, and the airport is known for its ambitious environmental goals. One objective is to reduce the use of fossil fuels by 75% by 2016.

One of the most exciting projects for achieving this goal is to test new groundbreaking technology for extracting deep geothermal energy. This is a brand new project which is now under consideration by Enova. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the company Rock Energy, with the aim of extracting geothermal energy as deep as 5,500 metres below the earth’s crust.

“The new terminal building is an example of the potential that exists when new buildings are built with energy-efficient solutions from the bottom up. This will enable energy results that make a difference. And with each new energy-efficient building that goes up, building owners and contractors will harvest valuable experience from the construction of such buildings, so that we can build more and better low-energy buildings in the future,” said Kismul.

“We are proud and delighted that Enova supports us as they do. Oslo Airport has high environmental ambitions, and I interpret this grant as meaning we are on the right track,” said Managing Director Nic. Nilsen.
