Bay Area airport boosts busy summer month by 6.1% over 2015

Oakland, CA, 2016-Aug-29 — /Travel PR News/ — Oakland International Airport (OAK) said today that it served 1.13 million passengers in July, a 6.1% increase over the prior year. It was the 32ndconsecutive month of year-over-year traffic gain at the Airport.

Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis, said, “We are thrilled to add yet another month to our tally of increased year-over-year passenger growth. This type of increase is particularly meaningful in July, which is already traditionally busy due to summer travel.”

The July percentage increase constitutes an additional 64,793 travelers at OAK compared to 1,067,398 passengers in July 2015.

Airport officials noted Southwest’s contribution to the July increase, as the airline upped its own passenger count at OAK by 7.3% during the month. Southwest now accounts for 69.4% of OAK’s total passenger traffic volume. The airline is expected to draw even more travelers to Oakland in the coming months, with its first international flights to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, scheduled to start in February 2017.

Allegiant also announced new service with nonstop flights to El Paso, which will begin in October.

“We are pleased with the way things are shaping up with seat capacity growth for the remainder of the year, and are confident that our customers will continue to respond to the service and options offered by the Airport and our partners,” continues Francis.

The Airport saw 11.2 million annual passengers in 2015, and is on pace to surpass 12 million this year. Oakland International Airport is the fastest-growing large California airport on a percentage basis.
