Massport Recognizes Employees For Outstanding Security Awareness

BOSTON – 2012-12-17 — /travelprnews.com/ — The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced the recipients of its “Logan SAFE” award. The award honors employees whose actions demonstrate exemplary security awareness in their daily responsibilities at Boston Logan International Airport.
“Protecting Logan Airport is a team effort that relies on a proactive workforce to act as the first line of defense against a wide spectrum of threats,’’ said Governor Patrick who attended the awards ceremony. “I am proud to honor each award winner for their outstanding service to the citizens and visitors of the Commonwealth.”
“Massport applies an effective team approach to ensuring the highest level of security and service at Logan Airport,” said Lieutenant Governor Murray. “We thank today’s honorees for their leadership and dedication in protecting customers who rely on Logan Airport throughout the year.”
Receiving the “Logan SAFE” award were, Glen Adams, a Massport quality assurance specialist; Shannon Carvalho, a station training supervisor at Southwest Airlines; John Crisostamo, a Massport facility mechanic; Viviana Florez, a Massport parking utilities technician; Katy Hadfield, a guest services teammate with Virgin America; Vincent LaMonica, a Massport parking utilities technician; Ernest Marzano, a Massport heavy equipment operator; Matthew McGaughey, a Massport skilled laborer; Christopher Pelusi. a TSA Transportation Security Officer; Endale Tadesse, passenger service representative for G2 Security; and Brett Portalla, an Aviation Officer at Logan Airport.
“Commonwealth residents and visitors using Logan Airport expect a safe travel experience, and the SAFE award symbolizes Massport’s comprehensive and longstanding commitment to the highest level of airport security for passengers and employees,” said Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Secretary & CEO Richard A. Davey.
SAFE, Security Awareness For Everyone, is a Massport campaign to advance the security awareness of airport employees and by doing so enhance the safety of the traveling public. “Security is a 24/7/365 concern and we need all airport employees, like today’s honorees, to be involved in making Boston Logan as safe and secure as possible,’’ said Massport CEO and Executive Director Thomas Glynn. “This program rewards achievement and reinforces the security mission for everyone.’’
Winner’s stories and photos appear on posters distributed throughout the airport. Employees are nominated by their peers based on the following criteria:
• Reporting a potential or actual security incident
• Preventing or detecting a potential or actual security incident
• Performing an action resulting in improved response and resolution by public safety officials
• Demonstrating exceptional support of security initiatives
• Other actions demonstrating exemplary security awareness or constituting instructional value.
“Massport has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in security technology and has developed security programs and techniques that are models for the rest of the country,” said Massport Director of Aviation Edward C. Freni. “But critical to keeping Logan secure are the thousands of front line workers who are the eyes and ears of this airport. We created this SAFE program to recognize their contributions, to encourage other employees to remain alert and vigilant, and to reinforce the idea that ‘security awareness is for everyone’.”
Boston Logan, 15 minutes from the intersection of Route 128 and I-90 and five minutes from downtown Boston, serves as the gateway to the New England region and offers nonstop service to 72 domestic and 31 international destinations and in 2011 handled 28.9 million passengers. Boston Logan is the Air Line Pilot Association’s Airport of the Year for 2008 because of its commitment to safety. Over the past decade, the airport spent $4.5 billion on a modernization program that includes new terminals, public transportation access, parking facilities, roadways and airport concessions, and has been transformed into a world-class 21st Century facility. The airport generates $7 billion in total economic impact each year.
