Massport Awards Annual Scholarships Scholarships honor memory of longtime employees and encourage Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs
BOSTON –2012-10-8 — /travelprnews.com/ — The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced the recipients of the Authority’s 2012 Diversity Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Scholarships and annual memorial scholarships honoring longtime employees Tommy Butler, Donna Rauseo and Lowell Richards III. Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school students who have shown an interest in community service, have been accepted to an accredited college or university and have submitted essay’s describing their career interests or how community service has affected their outlook on life. Scholarship essays are judged by a committee of Massport employees and family representatives.
Massport’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) scholarship is awarded to three graduating High School seniors annually. This year’s $1,500 prizes were awarded to North Quincy High School graduates Andrea Chan and Yufeng Wang. Chan will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Wang Northeastern University. The third STEM recipient was Winthrop High School graduate Joseph Francesco D’Amore who will attend Bridgewater State University.
To be considered for a Massport STEM award, students must meet the following eligibility requirements:
• A senior graduating from a Massachusetts high school
• Interest and desire in pursuing a degree that could be utilized in the transportation industry including aviation, business administration, accounting, architecture, engineering, finance and human resources.
• Admitted by an accredited school or university for fall 2012 as a full time undergraduate student
• Cumulative 3.0 GPA.
• Involvement in community activities and/or extracurricular activities
The Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship was awarded to South Boston resident Katelyn Coe, a graduate of Southfield School who will be attending the University of New Hampshire. The $5,000 Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who resides in South Boston. Mr. Butler was the long-time Massport Director of Government and Community Affairs and a son of South Boston. He was the former mayor of the South Boston Boys Club, Youth Counselor and then Director of Little City Hall in Charlestown and former president of the South Boston Citizens Association and member of the South Boston Irish American Society.
The Donna Rauseo Memorial Scholarship was awarded to East Boston resident Brenda Figueroa, a graduate of East Boston High School attending the University of Massachusetts Lowell in the fall. The $5,000 Donna Rauseo Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a female student who resides in East Boston. Ms. Rauseo was a graduate of East Boston High School and for more than 20 years was the executive assistant to Thomas J. Kinton, Jr. when he served as Aviation Director of Logan Airport and later as CEO and Executive Director for Massport.
The Lowell Richards III Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Dorchester resident Ashley Pirone. Pirone is a graduate of Madison Park High School and will be attending the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The $5,000 Lowell Richards Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who resides in the City of Boston. Mr. Richards was responsible for Massport’s strategic and master planning activities, including the airports and the seaport, as well as the agency’s private commercial and residential real estate development in South Boston, East Boston, and Charlestown. He joined Massport in 1999. Mr. Richards previously was an Assistant Secretary of Administration and Finance and Chief Development Officer for the Commonwealth and Deputy Mayor for Fiscal Affairs and Collector-Treasurer in the City of Boston.

Mackey. “It’s fitting that promote science and technology and that we remember our friends and colleagues Donna, Tommy and Lowell with a living memorial to their memory – and one that also carries on their important work.”
To be considered for a Massport Memorial Scholarship students must meet the following eligibility requirements:
• Residency requirements
• High school senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA
• Letter of acceptance to an accredited college or university
• Involvement in community service
• Obtain two letters of recommendation, one of which MUST be from the community service agency where the applicant has volunteered
Students interested in applying for a Massport Memorial Scholarship must submit an essay of 1,000 words describing their interest how their community service has affected their outlook on life.
