London City Airport wins Best Airport Category for airports handling up to 5 million passengers per year at the Skytrax World Airport Awards

LONDON, 2017-Mar-21 — /Travel PR News/ — Just a fortnight after picking up the Airport of the Year award at the London Transport Awards, London City Airport was classified as winner of the Best Airport Category for airports handling up to 5 million passengers per year in the Skytrax World Airport Awards.

The World Airport Awards, also known as the Passenger Choice Awards, are based on customer votes and are described by Skytrax as the largest, annual global airport customer satisfaction survey.

Declan Collier, CEO of London City Airport, said:

“This is deserved recognition for London City Airport on the world stage in its 30th anniversary year, following record-breaking passenger growth and a winning formula which differentiates the airport not just in London but globally.

“A quick check-in and arrivals process, convenient location near central London, and easy public transport access, continues to make London City an attractive airport for both business and leisure passengers.”

The Skytrax recognition follows a momentous year for London City Airport in 2016. The only London airport actually in London received planning permission for the £350m City Airport Development Programme, completed the first phase of a £20 million extension and refurbishment in the departures area, oversaw a £20 million runway overlay project, and was sold to a consortium of new owners.

The airport also welcomed a record-breaking 4.5 million annual passengers (representing 5% year-on-year growth), with business travellers accounting for approximately 52% of all passengers.

As well as being classified winner of the Best Airport Category for airports handling up to 5 million passengers per year, London City Airport took the no.36 spot in The World’s Top 100 Airports 2017, also compiled by Skytrax. Only 4 UK airports feature in the top 100, with London City ranking second-highest in a list which included Heathrow, Gatwick and Birmingham airports.

Separate to the Skytrax Awards, the airport’s Chief Operating Officer, Alison FitzGerald, was recognised by CIO UK as one of the leading women in the country working in technology leadership and driving change. Alison came in at no.11 in a list of leading CIOs by CIO UK, which provides technology and business leaders with analysis and insight.
