KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Lister Farmhouse adds 13 individually designed bedrooms, including family room options, to Thwaites’ accommodation collection in Malham.

  • The new rooms join The Lister Arms and Lister Barn, giving visitors a choice between farmhouse accommodation, a traditional inn and larger group-focused stays.
  • Bed-and-breakfast rates start from £185 per night in low season and £230 in high season, according to the launch material.

Lister Farmhouse has opened in Malham with 13 individually designed bedrooms, giving walkers, families and short-break visitors a new place to stay within easy reach of some of the Yorkshire Dales’ best-known landscapes.

The project expands Thwaites’ accommodation offer in the village alongside The Lister Arms and Lister Barn. Rather than creating a stand-alone hotel, the operator has converted part of an existing historic property into a smaller collection of country bedrooms, including family room options. The official Lister Arms accommodation pages now list the Farmhouse as open, after originally announcing a 14 August 2026 opening date.

For Malham, the addition is as much about broadening the type of stay available as increasing room numbers. Guests can choose the farmhouse bedrooms, the traditional inn experience at The Lister Arms or the larger-scale accommodation and shared spaces of Lister Barn. The Farmhouse also adjoins The Buck, Thwaites’ second pub in the village.

Heritage interiors designed around the Dales

The interiors were led by Jane Goff of Goff Associates, whose previous hospitality work includes Langdale Chase on Lake Windermere. At Lister Farmhouse, the design brief centred on retaining the character of the building while introducing richer fabrics, bespoke furniture and contemporary finishes.

Thwaites Executive Chairman Rick Bailey said the renovation was approached as an exercise in “careful stewardship”, with the building’s age and setting shaping the design rather than being treated as decorative background. The company also incorporated references to the surrounding landscape into the interiors.

One notably practical upgrade is air conditioning across the new bedrooms. The Lister Arms bedroom pages highlight the feature as part of the Farmhouse offer, giving summer visitors an additional comfort after days spent walking in the Dales.

A walking base close to Malham’s best-known landmarks

Location is likely to be one of the property’s strongest draws. Malham is a long-established base for exploring local walking routes and landscapes, with Janet’s Foss, Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn and Malham Cove all forming part of the wider visitor experience around the village.

That puts the Farmhouse squarely in the short-break and walking market rather than positioning it as a destination resort in isolation. Guests can spend the day on the surrounding trails and return to the same village for accommodation, food and drinks, with The Lister Arms and The Buck providing two different dining settings.

Thwaites has appointed a new executive head chef to oversee food across The Lister Arms and The Buck. The Lister Arms is focused on seasonal interpretations of familiar dishes alongside changing chalkboard specials, while The Buck retains the more casual role of a village pub for lunches, walkers, families and post-hike drinks.

Three ways to stay in one Malham collection

The opening gives Thwaites a three-part accommodation proposition in Malham. The Lister Arms remains the traditional inn at the centre of the collection; Lister Barn provides larger rooms and communal space suited to groups and guests travelling with dogs; and Lister Farmhouse adds the newest, more design-led bedroom option.

Director of Inns Mick Horan said the aim was to create more flexibility for the wide mix of visitors coming to Malham rather than relying on a single accommodation format. That approach reflects the village’s broad appeal, from serious walkers and couples on countryside breaks to families and small groups using Malham as a base for the wider Yorkshire Dales.

Bed-and-breakfast rates for Lister Farmhouse start from £185 per night in low season and £230 in high season, according to Thwaites’ launch information. Reservations and current availability are available through The Lister Arms website.

For Thwaites, which traces its history to 1807, the Farmhouse forms part of a continuing programme of investment in character-led inns and hotels. In Malham, the result is a relatively modest 13-room addition, but one that strengthens the village’s accommodation mix at a time when countryside breaks increasingly combine walking, food and heritage rather than treating them as separate parts of a trip.
